Yes Brooke, the Earth is, truly, a living organism in her-self. And, as you say, despite the almost unbeliveable strength mothers can show, there is a limit, unless you treat her with the outmost respect, love and tenderness; and work with her; at her side. And as with all women, approach he with a sense of courtesy.
Thanks for sharing and all the best! Olof

Love this one, Brooke. Such an ominous tone to this write.
The ending line is effective and a gut punch.

Yes, we are rapidly approaching the day of being "declined".

We are such a short-sighted, greedy species. It is a miracle that we have survived this long.

Hugs, d

Hello Brooke,

Wonderful strong and emotive imagery and metaphor used to support the message for Earth Day.

Best wishes,

"How many more years of our mistreating and wasting these resources will it take before those trees decline our demands they feed us?" This is the question that scares a lot of us today. If we keep doing the things we are doing to our planet what will we leave our children? Nicely stated, my friend.

Earth Day will be a yearly celebration that we will haveon Mars. We'll fondly recall how we left that awful place for the simplicity of a planet that can't be killed further.

Very nicely expressed, Brooke. I like very much the personification of the earth as a mother at the end of her tether.
Clever splitting of the lines of this rhyming, metered poem, so it almost looks like free verse.
On this subject, we did a costing exercise at work today to find out the cost of sending out 8,000 two-page letters. To my surprise the cost of the paper, ie 16,000 sheets, was only around £60, which seemed incredibly cheap to me. I wonder if it were priced higher, whether it would be more of a deterrent to use it carelessly, rather than relying on recycling campaigns?
The future is, indeed, scary.
My best to you,
Sally

Sally, thank you so very much :-) I remember when I worked at the American Friends Service Committee back in the day when memos were on paper, not emailed. There were three of us in my department, in two modest offices right next to each other. We would get memos about things like a change in the soda vending machine - all three of us! Heck, the secretary and I had desks right next to each other, and Jerry, the department head, was right next door. We couldn't pass such inconsequential memos around to each other? You're right, something needs to be done that has a little logic to it :-) Brooke

This is a beautiful wake-up call for every inhabitant of our beloved earth. I wish your voice would resound through every country so that children of the earth will learn to respect the earth before it is too late.Really great poem with a lovely flow. kudos

Hi Brooke,

Nicely put, I think a part of the problem is our species simply will not control our numbers.

Secondly, of course, if we will live in flood plains, along earthquake prone faults, in areas where tsunamis are regular features ... Yup, nature can bite hard.

Population numbers are a huge problem, and a major factor in the 'poverty' of many countries. Glad I could raise a smile with my satire.

adewpearl,
Enjoyed your Earth Day lament. I particularly liked the first three lines describing earth's gifts--"sweet fruits of every kind." Both truth and warning in your words. Thanks for sharing. elaine
