Ah, such good advice, so clearly written, with heart and love; this is an wonderful letter, Debbie. All children in that situation could benefit from it, and you share it in a way that makes it a compelling read. "It is a one-way street. Once the door is open, it will not be closed again." Excellent!

Great letter to a child put in a situation that might steal her childhood because the parent is unable to function. It's sad and unfair to expect the child to become the adult.

You share good advice here.

I have some editing suggestions for you.
Your father taking ill and needing to be gone, ********no comma, it breaks the flow******in no way gives your mother the right to lock herself in her room, ******no comma, breaks the flow again******expecting you to raise your sister, clean the house and cook the meals. She is

I may not have written a similar letter to yours, but then we are all different, aren't we? A couple of small mistakes, but they're of minor importance, main issue here is that you got the message out. Well done.

Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

That this letter comes from a wealth of experience goes without saying. What lifts it to an exceptional level is the insight captured and expressed so succinctly.

I had to read it several times for I feel the message is so much more than ever should be spoken to an elementary school-age child. Nevertheless, life's reality can push children to deal with matters well beyond their years, and I am ill-fitted to judge the life experience of another.

Well crafted. Well spoken.
Heartbreaking.
Sage advice.

Hi Debbie, lots of good points raised in this self-improvement
work for a "young lady." Some wisdom from one who knows and penned well.
A releasing work?? If so very well done in letting it all go.
Thanks for sharing,
Maureen
