That is a wonderful poem, Kay, and your authors notes are such a good read. It is strange how the white man, the pioneer, the ones to migrate to other countries, all think they know better than the native people who have survived for thousands of years without them. Thank you Sandra; my people have managed the land and lived here for 54,000 years, we have no written language and our religion or belief (better understanding) to worship nature and look after her. The fires continue. Bless you, Kay.

I would capitalize Earth
excellent alliteration and consonance of T sounds in streams turn to spittle
soulful expression of emotion throughout
vivid descriptive detail with strong sensory appeal
Fantastic personification of Mother Earth
Now she lays dormant - lies
good touch of alliteration in cannot cry
good internal rhyme in again/regain

There have been bush fires for millions of years. They are part of the life cycle. The reason they are now seen as a problem is, man has chosen to build villas and ranches in the bush. You are quite right - native Australians knew how to manage fire. But who listened to them?

The whites brought flour, sugar and rum to my people - today, the aboriginals are alchoholics and live on welfare. My people have been here for 54,000 years, they have no written language except pictographs in caves. Thank you for reading. Blessings, K.

An excellent free verse poem. Emotions surge as your worlds reveal a truth forgotten. Great personification and I love your selected image, a perfect complement to your work. So true, the lack of back-burning and the dry seasons have provided the perfect bush fire environment. Devastating to see and know so much suffering may have been avoided. Though credit to the performance of our emergency services and firefighters must not be forgotten.
"Great clouds pregnant with rain; breech birth" - love it and great 'b' alliteration. "would" and "could" - wonderful assonance allures the audial senses as well as the visual - the reader is drawn to read on with the development again of crisp sounds with the 's' alliteration in the following two lines. What a great first stanza.
Further poetic techniques continue throughout your poem providing vivid imagery, occasional rhyme and smooth flow, excellent alliteration and a continuance of the marvelous personification.
Your last line echoes the theme of your poem and completes your work so well. I enjoyed your notes, very informative for the non-Aussies. The red background and white font adds to the intensity as senses and emotions are aroused. Well done. A fantastic entry for the contest - good luck my friend. Love & hugs Lovinia .

It has been ages. I was off-line much of last year. Back again and catching up. You have written a great poem ... i love the concept you used. I hope you are not under personal threat from the fires. My mother (87 yrs) lives on the NationalPark near the northern beaches in Sydney. We had a bit of a scare on the week-end. Fortunately the virulent wins brought in some rain which helped get it under control before it did to much damage. There surely can't be anything left to burn in NSW. Except the coastal strip. We had a couple of fires just before Christmas and lost a few homes. It is a tinderbox. I don't remember them burning back last year ... they want to do it now ... probably start their own fire. Thank you friend, the fires are burning in five states (we only have seven states.) A combination of no spring rains, hot winds from the north west, lightning strikes and arson to boot. Blessings Kay.
