This is a beautifully written and very, very Western story of Christmas. I love the way the missionary told the story of the Nativity in a way that the Huron could understand and relate to -- the animals in the manger scene added a touch of whimsy to the oft-told story.

A lovely story told in few words, but no more are needed. Beautifully done. Descriptive, touching, while having a historic theme. Very nice.

This is beautiful and executed wonderfully! I read it because I'm in the process of writing one for the contest. Not sure I'll every come close to writing a Flash Fiction as well as you just did! I loved it!!!

Oh what a wonderful story! This story embodies the spirit of Christmas so well and satisfies the requirements of the prompt perfectly. In addition, you've given your reader a bit of history with the lovely Christmas carol written by the priest in 1643 for the Huron tribe. How lovely! I wish I had a six left from this week's allotment - sadly I am all out!

A very nice story. I particularly like the way the cultures adapted the traditional story to make it more relevant to the Hurons. In the U.S. the Hurons are regarded
as an Eastern tribe.
Well done, and best of luck at the polls.

Peace, Lee

Thank you Lee for reviewing my story. The story of Father Jean is very interesting. Unfortunely, he became a Martyr at I think age fifty one or so. Tortured and burned at the stake.

The Indian tribes in the north east we known for their legistlative value. The American Constitution is based on their rules. Your poem about Jesus is very well written with a smooth flow of words

This little tale reads like a dream come true for a lot of missionaries who venture out into regions untouched by modernization to save heathen tribes from damnation through the introduction of Jesus Christ the Saviour. I doubt convincing a people to accept foreign beliefs have ever been as easy as this, but it was an interesting read. As I understand it, Brebeuf wasn't successful.

You set the stage well in your opening
prophecies of this great Chief, but - add comma
I love the way this tribe incorporates Jesus into their tradition :-)
I love the consonance in ragged robe of rabbit skin

A very enjoyable read. You began and ended this beautifully, giving the background first, telling of the celebration, then tucking the princess into bed. It's wonderful to picture how a native American culture could take the Christmas story and make it their own, with a fox, buffalo and bear around the manger instead of the usual oxen, donkey and sheep. I like the way they reach out to the other tribes, and I especially like the poem, which is very creative:

"Within a lodge of broken bark
The tender Babe was found,
A ragged robe of rabbit skin
Wrapped His beauty 'round;
But as the hunter braves drew nigh,
The angel song rang loud and high:
Jesus, your King is born,
Jesus is born,
In Excelsis Gloria."

Only one small typo you might want to correct: "The young people of the tribe where (were) very excited."

Thank you flamingbush for your kind review and comments. I will go back and fix my typo. thanks. The poem (song) was written by Father Jean de Brebeuf in 1643 for the Hurons in their own language and later converted to French and English. I agree, a very beautiful poem/song.

While looking up Excelsis Gloria~coming across the word excelsior...meaning-1868-"fine curled wood shavings used esp. for packing fragile items." I think that the connection from "The Fox,Buffalo and Bear" to the Christmas season~manifest and somewhat humbling.
Enjoying this discriptive and imagery saturated prose~coming around from a seasoned writer...sensitive and bold. I gave you six stars~thoroughly appreciating the attempt to be festive...with tradition knocking at the door.
