Very nicely written poem about how one feels after their partner is gone. Whether yor one year or 60 years, thepain of waking up alon is not something everyone looks forward to. Very well written and you did a great job with it! Good luck in the contest.

Excellent sensory appeal with the sound of the train and the feel of the sheets and the overall silence of the empty room.
You convey perfectly the overwhelming feelings of loneliness when one loses the love of his/her life. Brooke

Hi,

Your choice of art along with your words grasp the readers attention and the sense of aloneness due to becoming a widow is easily felt. A stark reality takes place. A very well written poem. Best wishes with this contest and thank you for sharing.

Mtnspirit, thank you for reviewing my poem and well wishes for
the contest. The picture was taken a few winters ago from my front porch. It looked so cold and lonely is why I decided to use it. I'm glad you liked the poem and the picture.

Silence can be deafening. Such a heart wrenching poem, and so understood by some many.

The photo is perfect as it is darkest before the dawn, and some times in that early morning light is when we hurt the most.

My husband is still alive, although he came within hours of dying last year. So, these type of thoughts went through my mind.

Blessings, Jo

Thank you Joann for the kind review. I am glad your husband made it through his crisis. I have not lost my husband but yet these thoughts have gone through my head, too, when I lost my brother and Dad.

There doesn't seem to be a loneliness that can compare to the empty silence left by a loved one who has passed from this life. Good luck and blessed be.

Your chosen artwork is most apt: Never did silence speak louder than on deserted streets muffled with fresh snow. Loneliness is not so heart-and-breath-stopping; more of a dull relentless ache. But loneliness and grief are brothers, and they work as a team.

The fist days after our loved one passes are confusing, you still think they are around. We are in a state of non believe and feel very lonely. It takes time to accept what has happened. It's like we have been stripped of all that really matters. Afterwards, for many the emptiness is a way of living. You have described loneliness as it is. The wording is used is good for delivering your message. The art used is a plus to your write. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you rebekka for your review and keen comments of my work. I have not lost my spouse.I appreciate your empathy, however. This work is from my thoughts of how I would feel if I did. Instead I took the feelings of how I think my mother and my sister-in-law might have felt when my dad and brother died.

For some reason, the train whistle sounding in the silence is an incredible image echoing the loneliness of having lost a lover of longstanding. What a truly beautiful, haunting write! :) Sharyn

Thank you Sharyn. I too, have always thought a distant train whistle in the night or early morning is one of the most lonely sounds I know.
