This not only deserves a SIX but also three gold stars and an elephant stamp. It is absolutely beautiful in its composition, contents and imagery. What a lucky little boy to have a daddy like you! The best part of this poem is this. Children who are loved and cherished like your son usually grow up to be the same kind of parent as you. So your grand children share In the same loving heritage as your son. The poem, in blank verse, is sequential and careful in its beginning, middle and end. Altogether, a loving tribute to parenthood cheers Cass

I viewed this work from an outsider's POV. I have not taken any of my children or grandchildren to day care, it was not needed. I can see the poignancy and love through the words. I can see the writer's pages in the fences. Thank you for a beautiful poem.

Thanks Henry, for your kind review and stars. Actually, I did make an error in calling his school, day care as the whole social environment there in Australia had me mixed up for awhile, but anyway, it's a pleasure to meet you and I hope to see you often. Blessings always, HIS GRAYNESS; Vance

Thanks, Vance, for sharing this sweet, tender memory. As parents, we have such a short amount of time when our kids need us and want to be with us. Sometimes there are fences built by society and some just by the passage of time.

Thanks so much lyenochka, for your kind and lovely review, and yes, you are right...we do have such a short time to be with our children and it seems that only when the time is gone, do we realize how precious it really was! Wonderful to hear from you and please stay close always! Vance

Greetings Vance, this was a wonderful write. It is strange how many things are kept from us by fences.
This doesn't even include the fences and walls we build around ourselves.
A truly thought provoking write my friend.
Love and hugs

Dearest Freda...and the boys: so wonderful to hear from you and thanks for the wonderful review and generous stars! I've been travelling a lot lately and a bit tardy on my Fanstory connections so I apologize for being a bit late in responding. I hope all is going well with you and the boys and family and please pass along my sincere hugs, pets, and ruffs to them! I so dearly hope to meet some day soon. Blessings and love always! Vance

This is beautiful! So touching and full of sweet sentiment. There is nothing so blessed as a child. I'm so glad you made memories such as these to recall to your mind as days so quickly turn into years. Enjoyed this poem immensely!

in South Australia? thought you were in Vegas Vance? this is such a sweet write - incredible how little ones can "touch" us and make us so vulnerable - and also enable us to feel unconditional love. My husband likens love for a child as "wearing your heart outside your body for the next 20 years". Lovely! :) Sharyn

Sharyn: I'm dual citizen and lived there for ten years. Biz brought me back to USA. This goes back to Carson's early years when I was living in Adelaide. He is now University in Canberra and will be here for Christmas this year. That Pacific Ocean makes one heck of a prodigous FENCE! Vance

I know what you mean - I'm about to apply for citizenship of the U.S but will then have dual - and I have a son in the UK, with grandkids - so yes, oceans do make a heck of a fence!

I wish I had a six for this one, Vance - this is a story that will tug at the heartstrings of parents around the globe. We all live for those precious moments. How lovely that all he wanted to do is be with you having an experience, no disappointments when planes did not give a show. And then the scene in the daycare, that nearly sent me into tears :-) Brooke

Brooke: Your words are a six in themselves! I'm honored and more than delighted that this work has the power of emotion that I wanted to share with you and others who might cling to those very special moments in their lives where love just EXPLODES!!
Thanks for being out there in my world! Vance

This is a wonderful piece! It played like an Indie film in my head as I read it. I used to take my son to the local airport to do the same. Would you believe they kicked us out?!?! :) Caden remembers it well (he is now 9!), and I suspect your son will, too. Nice writing!

Hi Vance,
You have penned a fabulous poem for the free verse contest. Fences are built to keep us out or keep us safe. This poem tells a wonderful tale of your son when he was little, a lovely walk down memory's path and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. Well done and good luck in the contest....chey

Chey: Thanks so much for your comments as this one is really special to me! I is a true story and came from the heart. Today my son is still in Australia in University with the great PACIFIC ocean as a mighty fence between us. But he will be here for Christmas and I won't have to try and look through THAT fence.

Yes, he is far away but you will see him soon! Loved your poem...chey

Thanks again chey! Vance
