A bit brutal chapter Mike, sounds about right, a Church employing a monster to do its dirty work for it. One who gets pleasure from torturing another knowing or at least believing he is immune from prosecution, an evil twat :)
Another great chapter mate, I'm thoroughly enjoying reading it :)

Thanks mate :-). He is a proper nasty piece of work, but one who has a key role to play in the proceedings to follow.

Well, he's had a rotten day, hasn't he? The churchman with integrity standing up to the government hatchetman will pay with his life, no doubt, but he'll do what's right. There are signatures on the papers, though, so there will be more killing before this is over. Well done, Mike. :) nancy

Indeed, Crescent is a man who enjoyes his work. Of course, keeping such characters on the books can be hazardous ...
Thanks so much, Nancy :-). Right, really really being nagged to go watch TV, now. Time to log off for the night.

Great cliff hanger! Story moved very fast and kept me fully attentive to the screen. Can't quite figure out why these men want this paper rescinded though, which is unusual for me. Can't wait to find out. or did I miss something? don't think I did. peace, good job

Thanks, James! No, you didn't miss anything - all shall be revealed soon. I'll try to be a bit quicker with the next section. I don't have a contest picture beckoning me to write a story to distract me :-).

Wow! You did a great job with the last scene. I was really sucked in...totally mesmerized. I could feel those awful whacks, etc. This chapter is well written, as are the preceding ones, with a nice balance between descriptive passages and dialogue.

Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the read. I really enjoy writing action sequences, partly because so many fantasy writers seem to avoid them. There's nothing like a good bad guy :-)

You always bring home the ink and weave it as it should be - only wish it were longer though I know why you novelist have to keep them a certain length - excellent closing and thanks for the always helpful notes

Thank you, Tammy :-) . I'm usually happy to post longer chapters, but this one came to a natural break and it would've been about 4000 words if I hadn't. I'll try to get a move on with the next installment! So happy you liked it.

I wanted to give this six stars but I've only two left and it's only Tuesday! This is great stuff. Very real characters and natural, unforced dialogue. Extremely well observed reactions to violence and torture. When you do nasty, you really do NASTY, and some of the phrases you use had my toes curling. I did smile a couple of times though, honest. Keep 'em coming!

Thank you, Scribbler! I do like to make violence nasty - I think it should be disturbing. I do tone it down for contest entries because otherwise I'm shooting myself in the foot, ragged splinters of bone bursting from my shoe in a spray of perished flesh and sticky arcs of blood ...
Lol, sorry, couldn't resist. I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter :-)

You are the best when it comes to fighting and evil...not sure if that came out right. Fascinating and intriguing chapter. I anxiously look forward to reading more. Great work with this one.

Lol, I'll tell my work colleagues you said that! I love a good fight sequence, as you know, and baddies are a lot of fun to write. So gold you enjoyed :-)
