I had no idea you were going through this either! I am so glad that it sounds like you're keeping your spirits up and thinking positively. I can understand worrying about it recurring.

Take care you!

My sister is 13 years survivor...she didn't want to lose her hair so after treatment she sat with an ice cap on her head, that had to be pretty numbing and painful but she did it and didn't lose a hair. Bravo to you for not losing yours I do think that has to keep the spirits up a little bit. I applaud your bravery because I truly believe anyone who goes through this is brave. Be well - Dinah

Oh Barbara it's so nice to hear you're well and your spirit is light and joyful. Being healthy is the most precious thing in life. Nothing, and I mean nothing matters when you face disease. Yes, an awesome family and friends make it easier but all in all you face the abyss alone. I learned this the hard way myself. I am so happy the sun is out in your neck of the woods:)

I had no idea you had been going through this. My brother went through several rounds of chemo about 10 years back. Some of the effects they told him would stick for life have faded or disappeared completely, so keep your chin up.

I like that you exposed the answers to many questions in this format. I think it helps the cancer survivor to get it out and on paper, and it helps the family and friends to see exactly what one is feeling. Overall, I thought..you should name this piece triumphant because you are and continue to be over cancer. Thank you for giving us a view into the world of what it is like..many prayers to you as you recover. Nice work.

You willing ness to talk openly about both the struggle and the recovery is sure to touch many lives and educate.

I've journied beside three friends with cancer and their biggest disappointment if lifetime friendships when clouded by the dreaded word 'cancer' is that they don't know what to say, what to ask and so choose nstead to withdraw and leave the person alone. Decades of intimacy is lost at a time when the cancer patient needs friends the most.

Your straight forward, and occassional wry humour, will go distant miles in helping folks know it's okay to ask and it's okay, almost a neccessity to talk through and around the disease.

Wonderfully written....SB sunbathe instead of sunbath. ingrid

Thank you for your kind review and insight. I have been open about my cancer since I was first diagnosed. I sent a letter home to my first graders parents to let them know why There would be a substitute in the room for my second breast surgery, the first one happened during the summer, and why I would miss Thursday afternoons. I had to get it okayed through my principal. She asked are you sure you want them to know your personal business. I said, "It's their children this is going to effect and they will notice I've gone bald." She said, "I gues that's right." I wanted to be open and let them know their children were being taken care of.

And educated about life, disease and compassion. You will never be forgotten by any of them, by respecting them enough to honour them with truth.

Dear Barbara, I am so glad to hear that you are doing better. I know you will still have your struggles. If you have never been to Colorado before, please take a lot of rest breaks. You are right being a Texan you are not used to it! LOL As an Okie I wasn't either. Do not feel awkward if while you are there if you need to run by the hospital and ask if they will check your oxygen saturation level. It is just something that they will slip over your finger. I found out the hard way high elevations above 7000 will make me have seizures if my o2 sats are low. So please just rest a lot. Take naps. I pray for your good health, Shirley

I am sure that your open and honest discussion about cancer has helped many realize there is life on the other side. There will always be fears, but I think we start to get them around this age anyway (Not that yours aren't more warranted.) There are annoying side effects long after any serious illness of injury. I still have them from my accident in 2004, at this point-just glad to be alive. Thanks so much for sharing this in such a personal way~Debbie

I admire your strength and perseverence through this difficult journey. Your essay has taught me much, especially about adapting to changes like on your vacation in the gulf. Love the kitties.
