I like the word/heard rhyme and the power of your observation in the opening stanza
I really like the simile of the quiet, wordless poem like a foal first trying to stand
that final image of the scratching quill as the poem is finally being written is really good - Mike, this is one of your best, in my opinion :-) Brooke

Wow, who needs a six with such a final comment. Just posted one of my worst on Facebook, yet the funniest as it involved Mila's moth to the flame, which I was referred to by her. If you ever seen the torments of an idiot abroad, the main star or innocent character is Karl Pilkington, who is subjected to the international whims of the producer; the comedian Ricky Gravvis. Karl wrote a poem about being a blind moth and I quite like it. Seeking Heaven's warmth, verses finding oneself consumed into the flame.

I like the imagery of the foal being born as I saw that happening naturally, and the wonderment was in watching him being encouraged by mom to get him to stand, yet there was a certain matter of fact regarding nature. I feel that every person should witness such an event, heralded in by the trumpets of heaven. I sort of filter out for everybody, that fact my attention was drawn to this event by six boyscouts screaming that, "A horse hurt itself peeing! (the breaking of the water.)

I know the quill is a poetic symbol, but to me it is both one of extreme angst as well vengeance on a sublime note. My father learned penmanship from the aged old tradition of the Catholic Nuns. Screwed out of providing me such an education, he took it upon himself to develop my handwriting skills, and I won as I drove him to the point he felt he couldn't take it further... In fact I think he broke my hand a couple of times. Yes it was worth it! Come about 22 years later, my father witnesses me putting my fist valid poem into a photographic display and amazed I spent some thirty hours penning the calligraphy. He had to admit I came a long way and asked why the change. He never expected, "Dad, to me this deserved a work of art... I never could fathom the common sense of spending twenty minutes into writing a check!"

But I am far from complete as I want to create a quill that I can write from. It will eventually come as that need requires to be fulfilled. Possibly next year as funds permit. I consider myself to be a poetic writer as it cuts though the BS of poetry, and stymies those who actually have an opinion of what a poet is supposed to be. Just too much fun to pass up on, and has an amusement value to keep me going. To me poetry is not about writing, being accepted or trying to fit into a moulds; it is a state of being that is not only truly gratifying, but provides a true joy until the inevitable.

How do I write a poem about that!

No thank you BS. This review truly honors me... It keeps me trying, and thinking. Mike

Good for you, Mike. to know you need a day of nothingness and you just go right ahead and have one. It has to do your soul and brain some powerful good to find some time to ease back and just be...just be still. Loved your poem!
Smiles,
Indy :>)

Loved this review and thank you for it, as well the compliments. I have gotten in trouble for reminding people that brains are filled with fat, and I do believe it can become depleted of fat absorbed annuitants and doesn't like it too well. Mike

Being a writer has its moments...I never suffer from writer's block..I love to play ghost writer and do other people's stories which is often harder than doing your own but ti is such an awesome feeling to share stories that need to be shared but will never get shared if someone doesn't write the story for them...I do many other things...fortunatly things seem to stay pretty balanced...there are time I don't do any of the things I do..everything including kmy brain takes a break. God bless.

The mind refuses to think when it is tired or already fed up. It needs some kind of rest. The mind is like a machine that when overworked would stop functioning. That's what the writer, I suppose is telling. His description and words are excellent. Congratulations.

Hi Mike,

If the capitol words were used for emphasis you don't need them as the poem is powerful without them. I do agree sometimes we need to rest our minds so the words will come and flow through us. I usually write while watching TV at night..no wonder some of my poems fail! You have used descriptive words to express yourself and the theme is wonderful....well done, chey

I thank you very much for the compliments and this review. Visually, that is the way it all wanted to come out. Because of the quirks of the advanced/alternative editor here, I saw it both ways and settled for this. Mike

So very true, and I agree with you 100% every writer needs a day of nothingness. But in saying that I have not done this yet myself. I don't worry about writers block, I worry about the day when I can not write. I have glaucoma and my writing is my outlet and I love doing it so much. I fear the day when I can not see the words I have written.

Thank you for sharing this lovely piece of work with us.

Wow! What a review, and a heartfelt on too. There is medication and hopefully that is stemming the tide for you and even if the inevitable happens, perhaps you will be able to adapt.

I sort of lost my fear over such things, as I will either adapt, change and find other things, or not even realize my demise. My life has led to such a conclusion.

I thank you very much for this wonderful and heartfelt review and the compliments. God bless! Mike

Ah...very zen! I'm wondering if the larger case words are deliberately the poem and the smaller case is the fluff? (fluff may be too dismissing - maybe back story or commentary?) I like that format.

Words-clothing has a deep resonance for me and speaks on many levels, i like that, too. Thanks.

Not at all, I just wanted the larger sized lines to have a bit more emphasis. I thank you for this interesting and enjoyable review. Mike

This poem is very good. I think we are at a loss for words more times than we can say.Writers block can come if we don' t keep writing something every day. Well done.

I don't think it is a matter of keep writing, as occasional rests can work wonders and one mind appreciates the break and comce back stronger. I don't have writer's block, but writer's cramps so with some of the topics I have been tackling, a little rest did the trick and at least allowed me to write this one. I enjoyed this review and thank you for it and the compliments. Mike

This all "sounds" good to me -- yes, the pun is intended. There are times when poetry is "felt". Your words describe it well. Also the words paint an image especially the "foal".

I wished everyone was around when a foal comes into being, it is an extraodrany experience. Funny too, as we were alerted to the event by a bunch of panicked scouts yelling, Help! A horse just hurt itself peeing!" I am glad you enjoyed the poem and thank you for the compliments and this review. Mike
