Wonderful use of sentence variety. I see why you are in the top ten. I'm like you. I don't want to hear a play-by-play description of what the surgeon will do. Love the humor of the surgeon crushing walnuts in his armpit. I think there are more positive experiences in hospitals than bad. I fractured my hip and had three long pins inserted through the femur to the cracked hip bone. I too recovered quickly, walking without a walker after six weeks. Never used a cane. But credit goes to the surgeon, for sure. My husband got a bad one, but that's a whole 'nother story.

Hi, Spitfire. There are a few lazy surgeons out there. I say lazy because I know that some doctors use approaches that are easier for them but don't have the best outcome for hip surgeries. As you know, one always has to check credentials, get the feedback of other patients and do some research into the technique proposed. And that's amazingly easy on the Internet.

Thanks for your complimentary and generous review, my friend. Much appreciated!

    Warm regards, Bev

Dear Writing,

I am glad your hip surgery turned out well. Yes, we are fortunate here in the US that we have good medical care. Orthopedic doctors do make a lot of money. I liked how you felt your doctor could cursh a bag of walnuts with his arm pit. (LOL)

Warm regards,

Winslow

Hi, Winslow. My doctor is a dynamo. He's no more than 5'4" and coaches and plays hockey. In fact, my first surgery date had to be put off because of a wrist injury when someone bashed into him on the ice. I think the man is crazy to risk ruining his career, but doctors have so much stress and need to let some of that out.

He's made a heckuva lot of money off me. Three surgeries and a series of knee injections to add fluid to the joints at $400.00, each for a total of six. But, God bless him, he's earned every penney.

Thanks so much for your great review. Nice to hear from you!

With any type of surgery, there are risks involved. From what you have shared, you made an informed decision to proceed with the surgery, trusted God to guide the surgeons hands, surrounded by family and loved ones joined in prayer, with a beautiful outcome. We have so much to be thankful for here in the United States and we should learn to not take things or people for granted and appreciate the opportunities we are afforded. Have fun dancing. Thank you so much for sharing. Be encouraged.

Hip, Hip, Hooray/Love your title. I'm a title person, if you hadn't noticed----I had surgical placement of a brand new prosthetic hip./I hope they don't slap used ones on our asses----previously repaired a torn rotator cuff and knee ligament injury./Are you accident prone or are you as old as me? I go by the handle of Methuselah----has a well-muscled torso and could probably crush a bag of walnuts in his armpit./Great image!----blood thinning-drug named coumadin/I've been on that crap for 27 years----I would have extensive bruising of my surgery/If you stay on it as long as I have, your face will become one huge bruise like mine. For short they call me BB-Brutal Bruiser----But, when our health care system in this country works as beautifully as it did for me, it's hard not to be in awe of the advantages and privileges we enjoy here in the United States./Amen on that. Too bad it'll change by 2014. All fourteen of my doctors tell me they'll retire before then, because of the anticipated new rules and mandated participation that they face. It's great to be old these days, because there won't be many doctors active in the coming years.

Hi, Axel. Though I am 58 the problems with the shoulder and knee came about due to injuries from falling - which I am prone to doing because I don't look where I'm going. Well, I do now! I am so glad to be off the coumadin - that stuff kinda scared me. And I hate getting blood tests. That's disturbing that your doctors feel that way, Axel. Makes me wonder what they know that we don't?

Thanks for your great review. You are always thorough and generous with your support. I really appreciate that!

I asked my cardiologist that same question. Most of them could never know this, but after the new healthcare bill was passed, most had others research the 18,000 word bill (that was not read through by most voters in congress)to see how it would affect their practice in the future. Nobody really knows what's going to happen, but my (old) doctors are betting it ain't gonna be anything they can live with. We'll see. At 75, I've lived a full life and am ready for what comes next, plus I have no control of events to come--except to not vote for the one I voted for last time and pray I'm smarter this go around.

I find that the doctors of the age group you mention are very resistant to change. I worked with a physician for 25 years who was of the old school - had been in the military. Back then, they were treated like gods, literally. So, of course, I can imagine that they hate to give up that control. That's not all that's behind their decision, I'm sure. The sheer volume of note keeping and records required is unbelievable. Like you, Axel, I feel I have had a good life and that from here on out I have to take better care of myself both emotionally and physically. It's always great having these discussions with you. I like your direct and honest approach. Take care, my friend. Bev

You hear people say they are survivors, and they are right in their own minds, but I'm a real survivor. I drank alcoholically from 18 to 42. I hurt a lot of people emotionally (not physically, thank God) in the process. Had the first of three heart attacks at 46. I've got cardiac hardware in me that approaches the six million dollar guy. Died for five minutes in 2000. No, I didn't meet Jesus, but I didn't go to hell either. I'm an open book for people that I trust, because over my 33 years of sobriety, while helping other boozers in AA, I realized my purpose for still being alive was to give back what I'd gotten. Most of all, I don't take myself seriously, because I've been close to death too many times. I enjoy chatting with you also, because I sense you are not judgmental and I appreciate reading good writers that I can continue to learn from. Thanks, Axel

What an amazing story. You have more than atoned for the early mishaps and confused decisions, Axel. I hope you don't mind my using the world atone, because to me it means returning to oneness. So inspiring, my friend. Have a lovely weekend! Bev

Phew... I'm so glad you've recovered! That's very courageous (and trusting) of you to have this hip replacement. You've written a comprehensive and promising account of your experiences which will encourage others do the same if required! Thanks for sharing.

Oh, Bev. I had no idea you'd suffered so much pain. I know several people here who have undergone this procedure, as did my father-in-law in France. Every one has come though with flying colours. One friend, a golfer, had a double replacement and is now back playing golf again, albeit a wee bit stiffly!

So pleased to hear you're on the mend. This was an interesting and very well written piece.

could probably crush a bag of walnuts in his armpit. _LOVE THAT!

Hi, Av. Thank you for your wonderful review, my faithful friend. They tell me I'll be doing more as the months go by. Unfortunately, jogging is out of the picture. But, I have a new, positive attitude without the pain.

P.S. Glad you liked that line, one reviewer was pretty grossed out by it (I wasn't expecting to eat the walnuts for pity's sake) LOL.

    Hugs back! Bev

Bev--I'm so glad your hip replacement procedure went well! I live in the non-clinical hospital world and usually folks just write if they have a bad experience, not a good one. It was a pleasure to read your story. Hope you share it with the surgeon! Nicely done! No errors noted. Karen

Hip hip hooray indeed..la cute pun :-)
I am so glad your surgery went so well and that you are now able to do things virtually pain free.
This is well written account of your condition pre and post op and how happy your are with the results.

I lived for years with hip pain and can relate to the part where you say you knew if you did too much you would suffer for hours after. Mine was fortunately fixed with surgery to smooth my existing joint.

Hi, Mel. That's wonderful that your hip was able to be repaired without the more invasive procedure. You might find this interesting: When I was studying Eastern Medicine, I learned a lot about body/mind/emotion connection. What is found out is the hip is the part of the body that represents feeling supported. The right side is the male side. It fascinates me because much of my life I've had to deal with domineering, abusive males. Makes you stop and think.

Thanks for this great review, Mel. I really appreciate your kind support and your generosity.

That is interesting, mine was the left hip, and as my mum left me and my step mum was a B***** so I guess I never did feel very supported by females....
I have my own theries on how my hip got damaged..but thats a whole other story.

I am so glad your op was such a success and you are feeling so much better.

    Take care, Mel

Thank you so much, misscookie. The knee replacements are more challenging from what I've been told. The pain, I'm, sure is partly due to how much we depend on the knee for proper body mechanics.

I really appreciate you reading my essay and offering your generous words of support and insight. Blessings, Bev
