A wonderful story! You certainly have the gift for it and what a life you have led. Thank you for sharing. I had a great chuckle about the owl. Frances

Sounds like a very interested week indeed. I'll bet the people at the newspaper were appreciative to your Grandpa as well...made for some good headlines.

bhogg,

This was a delightful story from a time we like to look back upon because nothing like it would happen now. Men seemed to have no accountability in those days so throwing the TV out the window would not so easily happen these days. I'm sure your grandmother was terribly angry about losing her beautiful car to an owl's rampage, but I bet she didn't complain too much. I thank you so much for sharing these stories of times past. And, I will never underestimate a small town in Georgia again.

I loved this from start to end. Very funny. Had me laughing with the owl. That reminded me of a time someone shot a pigeon and left in the refrigerator. I opened it a hours later and it was standing there shivering. It was really funny. Great story telling.

I love it and got a hearty laugh from me. I guess what we count as nothing depends on your point of view. This well written story about that week in 1960's would make anyone laugh, except perhaps, your brother!!! Debbie

Great read. All the better because it's true. I well remember at 12 years old, the shock of learning that my strict moral, upstanding father was a racist, although it had nothing to do with the Patterson fight.

Well done. Enjoyed reading.

Thanks for reading. I've wanted to write an essay on racism that involves what you're talking about. Like I observed with my grandad, for sure you would see some in my dad. Still, both have had close personal relationships with black people. It's a complex issue. Bill

I liked this story and your very clean, unadorned prose. I would have added Grandma's reaction to getting her Roadmast all tore up, but the story was enjoyable as it was. A very nice job.

Hello bhogg, Outstanding, what a story! I thought it was great how your Grandfather produced so much fodder for the local newspaper. It is so cool that in this small town big stories like this come to life. AN exceptional story, glad I had six to offer you. ;) Chrisfiore

Thanks for reading and for your kind and generous review! Both are appreciated. Small towns are something else. I lived in an even smaller Georgia town. My wife and I were amused to once read our names in the paper, having attended so and so's party! Bill
