Nice story , Susan. If you have to go, that is the way. Sounds like he lived his life as he wanted to except for getting married. Well written.Love you,Debbie

I'm NOT a lover of westerns as a rule, dear writer, but your talent for painting a clear picture and spiking it with raw and realistic emotions might just change my mind. Very moody and romantic idealism here...that of a cowpoke's peaceful slip out to the great hereafter. Nice details in the routines at days end, sleeplessness and the pains of old age. One might have wished he'd dreamt of his dear Lauralie, but I suppose a man is entitled to a bit of privacy, eh? Nice work here, Suze.

You have a gift for spinning a yarn similar to Garrison Keillor. Such a nice homey feeling story with a winning main character and a sad, but satisfying ending. Great writing!

Susan,

This is an excellent story about the death of an old cowboy, worn out by years of hard work. I enjoyed this post but found problems with apostrophes:

"He rubbed his geldings [gelding's] steaming back..."

"Good days [day's] work."

"...and outside a coyote sang it's [its] songs..."

Again a wonderful character sketch with a lyrical feel. And other trusty best friends- the old gelding and the sorrel horse who at the end canters frantically and whinnies for his master. So heart breaking. You are the master of emotional writes, my friend. Hugs, Shari

A short, fascinating story which made good reading. You presented a vivid picture of the old man going to his place called home after a long day's work and dying peacefully in sleep.
Good show.

Suse, this is one of your best stories ever!. Loved the wording as you wove together Charlie,s thoughts and actions on his last day-he came to life in the reader's mind. From start to finish I felt warm feeling for this good man. "He didn't dream and outside a coyote sang it's song to the prairie ... and told the old man good-bye." A perfect sentence announcing his death. Drop the comma in it's. Kudos, my friend! xxxSusan

Hi Susan!! Wow! Thank you dear friend. I think I got the apostrophe? I'll check later...I'm too nervous to do much...less than four hours til the damned knife. :( So scared...I hope you and yours are all okay! See you soon! HUG! Susan

Great stuff!
I'm glad I read this and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A brilliantly told story. You have a gifted way of weaving a story together that makes for a great read. Your descriptions (dark as velvet etc.)and use of language is remarkable.
Thanks for read

I just love reading your western/horse stories. You know this stuff and you write it well. Excellent description and voice. You place the reader into the story!! The ending is very subtle but sad. It doesn't hit you in the face but is pleasing to read. I love the last para!! Nice job. Enjoyable. Dana
