What a special, special man and story and so aptly told. But, I must say, I was afraid he wouldn't make it until the next day and the new room.

It just wasn't Boris' time to go it seems to me his trails made him stronger. Your story has good dialogue and characters. It held my attention very well and I would recommend this to others. Blessings Rita

Incredible indeed! I do like the beginnings of this story, interesting and left with unanswered questions! Good luck in the contest.

Your word choice set the scene for 'Boris and Shirley.' You had this reviewer dreading the description of seeing Boris when you finally arrived. Your twist at finding him in such good condition became more realistic as you began to describe him as a war survivor. You tempted me to want to learn more of this character's past life especially the years he spent with Shirley.

The thing that strikes me most about this story is that a ninety eight year old man could go through surgery and come through successfully! That is wonderful to hear. It reminds me of Sue Grafton's Alphabet series. The main character, Kinsey, has a neighbor who is a senior and has a lot of "sibs" as she calls them. They are all these seniors that are healthy and very active. I found your subject interesting and followed your story through to the end. I would be interested to read further as you develop this story.

I really like this contest entry. In a short space, you have painted a great picture of Boris and set the stage for the rest of the story. It's interesting because I can see this as a first chapter in the present day and the next several chapters could detail Boris's time in the war and the events that made him a great man. Really nicely done!

Thank you so much for your incredibly kind words and the six star review. I am truly humbled. You are right on target as to where the story is headed. Both Boris and his wife Shirley are Holocaust survivors who lost their entire families to the Nazis. I often speculate that it must take amazing strength of character to overcome the obvious and overwhelming urge to be bitter at the world, but instead, they have lived lives filled with great love. As you speculated, the novel will go back in time and chronicle their horrific, but incredible tale of survival, and ultimate salvation. Thanks again for your fabulous review.

Boris is great character. He deserves a novel written about him.
I love that summing up: 'or a lifetime habit of defying the absolute worst that life can offer'. We can't get enough stories about that kind of stuff.
I think the piece would have been better had it been written up as a scene, that is as a dramatized moment of the characters coming together, interacting and exchanging dialogue.
That would have put the reader right there in the room with them. And I'd have liked to have been there in the room with Boris.

Your story was well written and enjoyable. Boris certainly was a remarkable 98 year old man. It was interesting hearing about his recovery following the surgery. I hope you continue to write so that I can read more.

I think this would be an excellent beginning for a novel. From this short piece my interest has been piqued to find out more about this amazing man. His past and his character seem to be most unusual and I'd want to know more about both. The fact that the narrator has married into the family is an indication that he knows a great deal and will present it in a sympathetic manner. I just noticed this is non fiction. Even better. I'm sure it would turn out to be a most inspiring true-life story.
