I am trying to wipe my tears, and they keep flowing.
My friend Catherine invited me to attend his wake. (comma after friend)
He walked slowly next to her through the carefully tended garden (slowly beside her)
The horse remained statue-still as if he knew that he was king for the day and nickered occasionally (that is an extra word and can be omitted)
A bell tinkled and Catherine asked for a few minutes of silence, so that we could pray for George and for her. (again, omit that)

Well, I thought I was correct so I went to my books. The Writer's Digest; Grammar Desk Reference, on page says the name needs to be set off by commas. Merriam-Webster's Guide to Punctuation adn Style, on page 14 says the name needs to be set off by commas. You might want to do your own research, but I would say it's needed.

This is a sad but wonderful story. Sad because Catherine lost a beloved horse whose life she once saved, sad because Patches lost a friend and I'm a firm believer that animals feel a sense of loss. Wonderful because George did have happy years because Catherine felt compassion and gave him refuge and he in a way saved her life. And I love horses! My heart will always remember Dust O' Gold, a white quarter horse, Charlie, a Tennessee Walker and Wynter, a grey. Great human and animal interest story!

I truly did not feel overwhelming sadness during the day. George's life had become one of unbearable pain and it was the best send-off anyone could ever give a friend. I was so proud to have been part of it. Your words speak perfectly to how that day felt for me. And thank you for your exceptionally generous review. I'm very touched! Blessings, Bev

Doing the humane thing is a tough responsibility but a responsibility nonetheless. We have had (over the years) to make decisions (never for a horse) and these decisions are never easy. And there is a relief that our friend isn't suffering anymore. Good write.

It was poignant and heartfelt, touching me deeply, but so few people recognize how hard it is to let go of a friend like this. Horses are more than pets, they become members of our family. And the fact you addressed the relationship horses have with each other by bringing in Patches was wonderful. Hello, texanlady. I agree with you. Somehow people can understand the loss of a dog or cat, but not so much a larger pet like a horse. But I have quite a few horse-loving friends and they are passionate about their horses. After meeting George, I can honestly understand that. Thanks for sharing your personal story. I'll admit I thought at first it was a wake for a person so when I read "Put him down" I was taken aback. When I realized it was about a horse I was impressed. Your story was well put together and flowed well. A fitting eulogy for George in my opinion.
