Newbie, I see - welcome aboard!
Part of the learning experience can be trawling through a few chosen portfolios when and if you ever have the time - writing reviews and then replies to reviews keeps me away from my own writing more than enough of the time!
My port is a mix, but leans towards funny rhyming stuff like this one and then a few more serious pieces just to challenge myself

I haven't gone through so many cliche's in one sitting since Moses was a toddler. LOL! You sure can rhyme, though, Steveh. I thoroughly enjoyed this poem. I grinned all the way through it. Fun stuff. Good luck in the contest.

Very clever to get the rhyming and cohesion in so (apparently) effortlessly.
And how absolutely fascinating: I always thought it was 'desserts' as well - probably because I aligned it with 'having your cake and eating it', and sweets are a way of rewarding one.
I never linked it with the old French verb 'deservir' (serve well) which doesn't figure in the modern Google translate. Thanks for the lesson .. I'll find out if the verb is still used in French, because there are some I'm lining up to get their just deserts at the moment ......

Yes, this was just a piece of fun - and you're right, these ones just pour out. My fave line/verse was combining wheat/chaff with against the grain, but no one has commented - am I being too subtle?

Oh no, I got it, but if I picked out all the lines I liked, I'd probably end up quoting the whole thing! I actually really liked "that old fat lady's..." i.e. you sometimes didn't quote the actual saying but turned it into a little test (do you know that line?). I enjoyed both.
I've been quiet for so long, I did some pot-stirring; the Devil made me do it.
Someone wrote a piece lauding Britain (how great it was) and became very miffed when I wrote back a long list of cultures and countries it crushed along the way.
I can't help myself. Every now and then I have to step out of line, hit a raw nerve, string someone along, take someone for a ride, toss my hat into the ring, toot my own horn, upset the apple cart, walk into the lion's den... miaow...

Google certainly makes writing something like this so much easier - find a decent list and then pick out the ones with potential for humour or meter...
Whatever did they do in the old days - they must have used their brains!!
