I simply loved this! We have two outdoor cats and have witnessed similar scenes many times. Your description of the cat's tenacity is right on. Great description of the mouse and its family. I like the way you humanize their thoughts. "Snowflakes, fat and wet slapped down." I could feel those flakes as I read that sentence. This was a beautiful portrait of a day in the life of a barn cat. Thanks for a great read. Check one little typo:
-it's(ITS) whistle telling...

I always enjoy your stories. You seem to have a thing for cats. You can really pull out true emotion in your writing and that is difficult. I know. The cat in the picture looks just like one of my spoiled male cats we named Zeus. You would not believe how spoiled he is. He needs a belly rub every night before bed and stares you down until he gets snacks. He will even place his paw on you more than once if ignored. It is very evident why you are number four ranked. We never let our cats out. In the city they could easily get hit by a car. Kudos. ;)

Hi Bryan! Thank you! Zeus sounds like a doll!! SO sweet! I'm glad you are a cat person..neat! AND kudos to you for taking great care of your cats so well. They are like little babies to me? I love mine too much probably...she is 13 or 14 already and they don't live forever...oh. Pet Zeus for me?? Someday you should post his pix?? ")) susan

Time stood still, for Patches as he held his stance no matter what. This story gives one that feeling, for sure. The description of where he was and how he craftily waited was superb, I could see him still as a stone. The description of the events going on around this determined hunter - also superb. Bet, there were mice in the barn, as well. That might have him become an insomniac. I enjoyed every word! No, I don't think so...but I may be wrong? lol,Susan

This is delightful. I love animal stories, especially ones told from the animal's POV. You did a great job with this and kept me riveted to the screen from beginning to end. I enjoyed this very much.

In reading this very well written story, I could not help but smile. Once owning a rather large feline, named Patches, as a child, I could easily visualize the scene described, before me.

Thanks for sharing this. JW

Hi Jonathon! Thank you for the galaxy and kind thoughts too. I had a Patches too, who was also fat! AND killed by a nasty neighbor for crossing their drive...I still get angry thinking about it. I just can't understand....but, I do hope you will post something about your Patches?? SO sweet...I would love it...susan

Nice story Susan, I was afraid it was going to end badly for the cat who stayed too long and froze solid in the snow. Your writing sometimes has a twist at the end one isn't perpared for. I glad you didn't kill the cat. LOL.

Very, very nice, Susan. You tell this story with the same patience as the mouser. Nice and slow.
I watch the neighborhood cats hunt moles in my backyard all the time. They seem to know it is my yard, because when they are successful, they leave an offering on my backporch.
A thank you, of sorts.

Good stuff, Suse.

Peace, Lee

When a cat leaves you a mouse, it's telling you it likes you. And I bet you leave food for them too. So, they all know you are a nice person or they wouldn't do that Lee! :) Cats have more feelings than many believe. I've had them all of my life...my cat kisses me on my nose with her nose. I call it 'eskimo' kisses? But, any hoo, thank you for this wonderful review Lee! Hope your snow melts soon! So far, rain here! S

Yes, Suse, I have kept company with cats for many years, but with my mother's walking problems I could never have them here. But the local feline population adopted me. I know them all by name, and they all rub my ankles. One little scamp never misses a chance to sneak inside my house. It's not unusual for me to find three or four lounging on my car.
The snow is gone, Susan, but there is still a lot of debris, and many still without power. I heard a reported say that they have to go back to the 1600's to read of a storm that might have rivaled this one. I've my mother was still with me, I couldn't have done it.

Yes, my cat trips me alot! She tries to 'herd' me toward the cabinet where the catchow is! So, I imagine she will be my last housecat...I hope not tho. The cat that comes in your house sounds sweet...you should keep it with you? I would melt and cave. I hope you and your mother will be okay Lee! Write us a beautiful story about it? Your talent is so far ranging, from hilarious to the ability to make the reader cry. I will try to get caught up with you tonight. Stay safe! :))

Thank you, Suse. You gave me a good idea for a story about Me, Mom, and Hazy (the cat who sneaks into my house all the time).
Don't worry about my reviews, Susan. As long as we chat once in a while, and I know you are all right, that's enough. Lee

OH Wonderful, I will anticipate! Hazy is a cute name too! Can't wait! :) s.

The money's fine for this one, unless of course you want to add more to it.
Patches reminds me of our cat "Fatz".

Very well done with this one, Buck

HI Buck! Thanks! I try to use the prose chests, and it never works? SO, as long as you get something I guess. How do we add? I'll have to check that out. I had a real Patches too, he was black and white, but more white than black...SO sweet and a mean neighbor shot him as he walked across their driveway. My fault as I didn't call him back fast enuff. Cats are special...I love the one I have now! She's my 'baby'...Thank you Buck!! ")) Susan

Well done, Susan. Our mice have black noses (ask me how I know), but the rest tracks well. Patches would be called a barn cat here. The country folks would be overrun with vermin without them. Patches has an important job, and he obviously loves it. Enjoyed it. :) Nancy

")) HOW??? I'm thinking they might get into a burn barrel. I had two WHITE dogs once that did this and they sat before me looking exactly like school kids who got caught in the teachers desk. Or something...I had a photo of them at one time...but, thank you for a grand review! SO glad you enjoyed this one! I love cats! ")) xoxo, susan

We get field mice in the pantry almost every winter. I use live traps. My husband tolerates that, but he gets upset when I start to name them. Their little noses are black beads, just like their eyes. Their coats are gray, their feet and tails are pink. They'd fit in the palm of your hand. They really like peanutbutter. I think they're adorable so long as they're not eating the rest of my food. Okay, I'm strange. :D Nancy

OH Nancy! I know how you feel. I hate killing them too, but they are so germy...they can make you sick! If you keep that up I'm going to have to look up the name of the character in the movie BEN! and begin calling you that! LOL! No, but you're too nice! THo, nothing wrong with that, as long as you don't get sick...")) Funny and not strange...just sweet. x! <:D luv! S.

Ben was a rat, not a mouse. Yes, hanta virus is nothing to play with. There's a lot of cleanup involved, and I don't call them very nice names while I do it. But I'm critter oriented. What can I do? I think I have all the crevices stuffed with steel wool now, but who knows? :) Nancy
