This is a very cute story. I was intrigued throughout. A couple of errors: '...rough, too.' (comma required; 'wherewithal' is not correct as you have it; When you write, 'Mrs. White never said a word...' I thought that you were speaking generally, and of this specific night. I'm not sure if you've got the right plural for 'nemesis.' Could it be 'nemises'? Nice work...

Reading this made me think, we need a cat. I think of Tom and Jerry, my favorite old cartoon. What would they do without each other?

Susan,

This is an excellent snapshot of life on a small farm. In the end, everyone ate. Patches settled for cat food and the mice raided the trash bin.

I enjoyed this read and found nothing to criticize.

Hi Dave! Thank you! SO glad you liked this...I just love the photo...and had a real Patches years ago, shot by a nasty neighbor for crossing their drive. Sad how bullies just grow up. Thank you my friend...susan

Cats of all sizes and breeds have the ability to patiently wait for their kill. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for an easy read.

An amusing story of a cat and mice. It made absorbing reading.
A cat and mouse game is always fascinating.
the door opened further,and
Hunger gnawed at the bellies of the mice- cut the before mice
mice, and they crept back
fir tree to snooze and keep an eye just in case the cat decided to raid.

Hi Susan,
I enjoyed this.
You capture a cat's ability to wait and stay motionless for hours so well.
I liked the mice too.
Great photo of the cat too.
Good title too.
I like how you ended it.
hugs,
Katie

Hi Katie...thank you so much. I am just thrilled you liked my Patches story. My real Patches was shot by a nasty neighbor in southern Indiana years ago for crossing their driveway. I saw him there and was in a hurry so drove on to town. Another regret that haunts me still. If I had just stopped and called him back. God help me, it's my fault. Just like my dog Bear. I hate myself for these things...take care my dear friend...and warm! xoxo! Susan

    Hi Susan,
You're welcome. What a horrible neighbor! Where do these people come from?
    love,
    Katie

It's just Indiana, I hope. I hope it's not this way everywhere...I've never had such idiocy around me. I'm going to write about it someday after meeting with an attorney about the legalities of how to do it. That cat was just one of several pets we've had killed. Katie...it's just awful. That cat was the size of a mouse when I found him along a highway, about to be hit. I put him in my jacket and he crawled up my sleeve he was so scared...God help me, but I still hate those people for that. Patches didn't deserve to be shot. Well, I'll stop. I get so mad. Love you too. Susan

Oh girl, you have got to get out of the midwest! What horrible neighbors! You know people think New Yorkers aren't nice but I'd take a New Yorker any day compared to a lot of midwesterners that's for sure! They certainly wouldn't kill a cat! Geez! or torture their neighbors!
    xoxo,
    Katie

What a cozy and warm-hearted story you've shared with us, Suze. I liked the images of the rustbucket and stand-off between cat and mice. You enrich the scene with subordinate characters (the farmer and the sledders)and give strong voice to the main character--Patches. The scene isn't terribly dramatic, and yet I was at the edge of my seat, waiting (and rooting for) the cat to have his turn at victory. Be well, warm, and safe too, dear writer--S.

A wonderful story, I love the details in your writing. It was been my experience that male cats are lazy, they leave all the mousing for the female. This is a great story of adult and child. Anne
