This is a great children's poem, steve. You have all of their favorite costumes--ghosts, witches, skeletons and monsters. The rhyme and meter are really fun to read--quite bouncy.
You mention the event two different ways, its custom to trick or treat and the pumpkin or Jack o'Lantern.(I love the fiery grin through pumpkin skin--excellent personification!)
And asking people to be nice to the little monsters who come calling is really very kind because some people are awful to the kids who just want to have fun and of course CANDY.

Congrats! I see your first place win. Now, that I'm finished reviewing. LOL

    Thank you.
I'll take the win, even though I suspect it was cute triumphing over quality!
And I have never celebrated Halloween!

I think it may just be a USA thing. Another way to sell things. LOL Cute is an OK reason to win, silly.

Yeah, we tag along on your coat tails a little - I see Halloween stuff in the shops now and it's an excuse for theme parties etc but I don't know what I'd do if trick or treaters turned up at our door - I suspect the big hairy dog monster might be enough to send them running...

It isn't as safe as it used to be. More and more are not doing the door-to-door thing anymore. Parties are being substitued for the children so parents know were they are and what they are eating.
BIG older kids who are too OLD to trick-or-treat scare the be-jezz out of me. I turn my light off and let the dogs bark until I know they are all gone. It's scary and not in a funny way anymore.

A worthy winner Steve.

It encompasses the spirit
of trick or treat to a tee!

It is surprising just how many
people refuse to play along
for the little ones over here.

Shame really.

Very enjoyable I can see the reason for all the ribbons. I couldn't even imaging writing such a complex poem and have it flow so well. Good Job!

What a delightful entry this was Steve. And congratulations on winning this Minute Poem contest! Your entry contains the correct meter, rhyme, and syllable requirement. I blew it on the meter part! :)

Nicely written and a poem that a child would enjoy too about the fun of Halloween. Congrats!

I remember yours - very nice poem and picked up its share of votes despite the meter not being perfect.

this is cute poem to get us in the mood for Halloween. We'll soon be seeing all kinds of cute little ghosts, goblins and vampires at our door. It's one of my favorite times of the year. Your cartoon like picture fit the theme of this poem really well.
A perfect children's Halloween piece.

Wonderful! This is cute, descriptive, and cleverly written. It also fits this particular poetic form perfectly. This poem definitely paints the word picture of little ones coming to the door and the decorations, sights, and sounds of Halloween. Thank you, so much, for sharing!! -Jean.
