I found the entire essay endearing. i'm glad that at least in the author notes you identified your mentor as I felt that his name as an omission from your essay diminished the impact.

If I were to write this I would list all your accomplishments in the third person, then end the paragrapgh with something like .....if all it took to be intelligent, I guess the world would agee. The accomplishments are mine, but I was never defined by degree." Then continue as you did.

Despite the advertisement, you did a wonderful job of expressing one of the main pitfalls of intelligence, and the balancing forces that are needed to make it productive in the world. The two paragraphs before the last sentence are really succinct and well said.
Besides, people tend to ignore arrogant A holes after a short while:-). Good luck in the contest. Be well. Larry

I really enjoyed reading this, Al. I think you have nailed the contest requirements and I hope you win. Creativity is indeed a mark of intelligence.

There's a lot of emotion in this piece, Alvin. It's very obvious that you loved the two brilliant men that you describe, if one reads between the lines of your excellent essay. I think you were very lucky to have good role models for how to handle your own intellectual abilities. Good luck in the contest with your lovely entry. Warm regards, Bev

alvin,
i totally agree with everything you said. life became so much easier when i learned i didn't know everything. it also helped whenever i was around people who taught me more than i taught them. imagery is excellent. best of luck with this one.

Alvin, wouldn't it be refreshing if the "book-learners" would cross over. Over time in our fast paced world, common sense has been left behind to go with the intelligence. I thoroughly enjoyed this essay. It's clarity is crystal clear to me if that matters. td

Alvin,
I love how you illustrate, by way of example, those who had a profound effect on you. It seems that you gleaned so much from these two mentors, one familial, the other academic.
I think it is a wonderful thing that you had men in your life who you could learn from, who set a pattern in living intelligently, and all that encompasses!
(This was an enjoyable read, and I caught the self-deprecating tone right from the start)

The art work is great and the words very interesting

We can never stop learning within our lives.

Everyone has something to offer

within their lives if they want to share.

We are all unique in our own way.

We all learn in our own way.

The most important word in life is love.

As a writing you had all the elements of a good written work.

An introduction that aroused the readers interest.

The main body of the work was full of experiences and humour.

Then the conclusion which referred back to the opening paragraph and answered the question.

If we are going to learn we have to cultivate the quality of humility, the wise in their own eyes and the arrogant are difficult to teach. You have been fortunate to meet ones who are intelligent, brilliant even genius, but, they have one thing in common they have retained humility and have learned the lessons from the world around them.

Thank you for a wonderful write.

Outstanding entry for the contest. I thought of entering this with the idea i might give a different spin on the subject but you've voiced it exactly...just what I would have said (so this will get my vote). Compassion is the greatest intelligence as well as the 'knowing you don't know' tenet.

Creativity is the mark of intelligence. Love this line, and it is also one of the angles I might have used if I wrote for this contest (which i won't now, as it ends in 6 hours and you've already said it so well). nice how you include personal aspects in your entry. Good work and no nits noticed.

Warmly,
rd

P.S.

I also went to Oberlin college! Did not know we had that in common. I lived in Harkness Coop and studied mostly philosophy and comparative religions, but left in my third year to go and study Alternative Healing Arts--and ended up in India. Never finished Oberlin. Tickles me to hear you went there too, Alvin.

Thanks, RD. I didn't know you went to Oberlin! I majored in Religion! I was there from 1975-1979. When were you there? Thanks again for a great review.
reply by rama devi on 27-Oct-2011
I was there from 1985 and '86. I enjoyed the Religions of India class as well as Chinese Thought and Religion, but I do not recall the Professor's names.

The people who taught that whilst I was there were Miriam Levering (who went to UT Knoxville) and Larry Shinn. I think both were gone by your time.

    Yes. Neither name sounds familiar.
