It's unfortunate that incidents like this occur almost daily all over our country. I think the lack of common sense among our civic leaders might have a lot to do with the mess our beloved country is in now.

Excellent read.

Thanks for sharing the story. You have a nice conversational style. Your writing stayed out of the way of your message, which is difficult to accomplish. And, I always love a little spice at the end - "I think the little punk wanted to stay home."

I love the Omar Shariff comment :-)
Two weeks after they called his sister a whore? That is mighty harsh - around here kids get suspended for three days for doing far worse things
Good for you for stepping in - and yes, those zero tolerance incidents always make the news because they are so outrageously moronic. I love the humor in the ending - you needed a bit of comic relief at that point. And yes, if someone had ever called my daughter a whore at school, I sure would have expected her brother to get at least one good punch in! Brooke :-)

Great little non-fiction, bhogg:"What happened to common sense?" This ersatz grandson of yours made a heroic move and was wrongfully punished for it. The other guy, the potty-mouth guy, he got nothin'? Now THAT sounds muslim-ophobic to me.
I'm with you...Bader did nothing wrong. Even two day seems like too much - at least they backed off of two weeks - that would have been downright ridiculous.

But I digress. The way you told the story is just excellent. From your own past, what a great frame-of-reference story:

"He didn't do anything to me. Somehow, it made sense to him for one brother to defend another".

Now wasn't that a great situational decision!
And the last sentence in your piece is simply great storytelling, what with the way you called him a "punk" and how his "thank you" sounded sarcastic!

I too am a 60+ year old grandpa. It's great, ain't it?
The story you told is just real good.
Best regards,
Tom C. Adams

"but the story as he related it seemed TOO result in a totally unfair conclusion." TO

"Bader is still on suspension, but the two weeks was shortened TOO two days." TO.

Bader might have arranged the whole thing, just so he could have this little extended holiday. You might have screwed things up for him, Mr. Bill. LOL!

Cute story. You're right in that we have to learn to use our judgement. One rule can't cover every situation.
Well done, Bill.

I applaud you for getting involved. Bader might have thought being home from school would be a welcome respite from the attitudes of those boys, but one day he will realize that a white American citizen saw him as another American citizen, oblivious to skin color. And he will remember his father's words, too. Way to go Mr. Bill.

Thanks - I would like to think I have a big heart. I am close to all the neighborhood kids. I just got back from an extended time away. I missed the little rats! Bill
