This was a great story. You told it quite well, and it kept me interested all the way. I agree with your assumption that they threw the book at this boy, a little harshly. (I imagine the boy was just a little disappointed that his two week vacation had just been cut short!) LOL

Thanks Linda - both for reading and then for your kind feedback. I didn't even think about the vacation aspect until later and then had to chuckle. Regards, Bill

Bill, your story brings up so many issues that prevail upon us daily. Racism. Bullying. Neighborhoods. Whether or not to get involved. And finally, are our efforts to make things right truly?
Bill, I real admire the way you paced this story, and so deliberately tried to weigh all the circumstances. I know you saw flagrant injustice, but refrained from making judgement until you thought it through rationally.
I think you acted admirably.
Still, we're left to wonder what will happen next.
You are a good man, Bill.

Peace, Lee

Thank you, Mr Bill, for this story.
Well written.
Just a little quibble. Last paragraph. If in doubt, would it be more in keeping if Bader had reservations/fear about going back? His tormentors (unpunished) awaited him after all.

Never sure about how these things play out, but once, as the only Jewish boy in my year at a new school, I suffered racist bullying for many months. It ended when I finally lost it, fought back, hospitalising the ringleader and nearly got myself expelled. The bullying stopped that day though. It taught me something.

Thanks for the story and, being there for the youngsters, is a gift we all should be giving. Love H x

Bill, I agree with you about common sense. There's very little of it around, mostly because everyone is afraid of being sued or called a nasty name. I suspect I'd have handled it differently if I'd been the principal - but I'm not.

I think the wrong boys were punished, but then I don't care for the insulting of little girls. Bader did what he had to do. I wonder if he saw the days off as a badge of honor (Fonzie style), or just an outright reward. Kid logic.

One minor finger stutter: it seemed too result - to

Something to think about. :) Nancy

Golly gee, Mr. Bill what kid wouldn't want a two week holiday from school, ha, ha. Great article, and I agree our society seems to have lost all common sense. I have a sense that our media has a lot to do with that with there thrist for promoting their own bias agendas. It's a shame that the innocent like Bader fall victum, but's refreshing to see someone stand up for the little guy. Again great erticle.

I agree with what you say. Sometimes zero tolerance should read zero tolerance within reason. I also loved the way you ended the story. I can see any young boy thinking that way. Great story

Bill,
Your non-fiction piece is smartly written with classic humor. I loved this non-fiction essay and the comical ending: "I went over to tell Bader the good news. His mother was happy, but I wasn't so sure about Bader. The, "Gee, thanks, Mr. Bill", almost sounded sarcastic. I think the little punk wanted to stay home." Sometimes the rules for zero tollerance and the way the school principal has his or her head up their ass! I dislike ignorant folks who lump Muslims up as terrorist. It was only a group that was an off shoot of a Muslem sect. America is the land of diversity and brave. We shouldn't tollerate bigotry and the Media to inflame those prone to ignorance. There are hate mongers fuled to spread their cancerous hate. Your descriptive writing and narrative  are both excellent. It was a pleasure reading your top-notch piece of non-fiction. I'd recommend this essay to other reviewers. Have a very nice day.
Melissa.

Wow. I laughed at the ending. But it had to be spot on. You put me there. My son got suspended before the end of the school year last year. He wasn't going to fight the kid, until the kid told him he was having sex with his mother. Then my son when ape shit on the kid. But he kid had a friend with him too and my son in essence had been getting bullied. Funny thing they didn't acknowledge that. A familial writ worthy of circulation. Stan

No good deed goes unpunished. This rates right up there with the five year old being suspended for sexual harassment. He tapped his teacher on the butt to get her attention. Very well written.

Shame on you for making Bader go back to school two days early! Ha! You never can tell what will make people happy or sad. Good writing; good story.

but the story as he related it seemed too (to) result in a totally unfair conclusion.

but the two weeks was shortened too (to) two days.
