Ms Spitfire,
This is an excellently written piece of work. I catch people looking at my lazy eye occasionally, but no one has ever been brave enough or stupid enough to mention to me that I can't do something because of it. It sometimes bothers me when I catch someone looking at that eye, but I know that it doesn't stop me from doing anything I want to do, so all in all I am fine with it. Great work my friend.

Thanks for going back in my archives and reviewing this. when I turned forty I had an operation to correct it. Easy peasy.

I am just wandering around on FS looking for stories that have been rated very high. I think I learn a lot reading those that are already considered successful so, despite not much in the way of FS dollars, I am ahead finding them and reading them. This one is outstanding. Great job!

Thank you so much. I loved your piece about Grandma losing her memory and voted for it. I like to read the winners too. You learn what works. I'm flattered.

I have all Fridays free so far for October if you want to pick a lunch date, I'm ready. Appreciate so much that you went to my page and read this. THe sixer is most welcome. Thought I wrote your name and number in my address book, but I can't find it. Bev, I believe??

Hi, Spitfire. Thought I would stop by to read one of your writings. Good for your father! I admire him for standing up for you. More people should do this when they meet people like this so called Dean of Admissions. In my time, I've came across people just like him.
Oh, I'm associated with the teaching profession, too. I went to a retired teacher's luncheon yesterday and had a wonderful time!

What did you teach? I used to love my profession until the testing nonsense took over. I would like to get together too with people who taught at my school. Keep in touch with one on facebook and three by e-mail.

A well expressed tale of some community bias and standing up for, and protecting one's rights.
The piece is clear and the object clearly achieved.
Although a short one, yet it tells a lot about the character of the speaker and the important experience learned rather the hard way from her father.
A well deserved win, for crisp and original expression and the guts to speak out for what is right; and the wrongs of our societies: a seemingly minor thing that could easily affect the future of an individual.
Well done and best wishes.
As a fellow teacher, I confess- teaching without compassion is for charlatans.

Thanks for reading this story rawa. I can't see a college getting away with this today. More and more people speak out for rights.
I'm retired now, but talk about compassion. I cried when I had to fail a student. He knew he deserved it, but was touched that it affected me.

Teaching knows no retirement. Please pass on your experience to all around you!

Congratulations, Cassie. I love this story. I'm a guy who loves to see the downtrodden win out in the end. You have made that point very well indeed, in this piece. You are very deserving of the win. Bravo! Wish I had a six left for you. I was away when the winners were announced and am just catching up. Sorry. Bob

I am so impressed with your dad. It takes true strength to be compassionate and fair without being sappy. It takes true love to stand up for the right thing in the face of supposed superiority. I did get a bit caught with that second sentence, tho'. I had to read it twice to get it the way that you meant it. Maybe instead of that first comma just end the sentence. I kept wanting to read it as 'never raised his voice or showed compassion'. What a trivial point for a great read.

I'll have to take a second look at it to see your point. Thanks for the feedback. I remember almost word for word what my Dad said to that horrible man.
-
I see what you mean! It sounds as if he never showed compassion..
-
I'm glad you caught that. Hopefully, I fixed it.

This is a wonderful story, Spitfire, and I can see why it won the contest. Your writing style is captivating and professional.
I would venture to say that while it might have been better to have had the surgery at a younger age, living with it through your formative years might well have been a character builder that gave you more compassion as an adult. Bully for your father.

What an excellent story and a well-deserved win. I'm glad you had a father who stood up for you, who was kind and compassionate, but knew how to take on the bullies of the world if he needed to. Stan
