Don't get me started about the parameters on FS being ignored. I bet I know who you are referring to because I questioned an entry in a contest about not following the rules and the response was, so what?
Anyway I love the poem. The alliteration and assonance are perfect. You also made a bold statement that can't be ignored.

Well I have to shut up about it now, because I ended up winning the contest anyway - I was just puzzled why voters would choose a poem thatbroke the criteria...

No don't shut up. You're right, if rules are to be ignored why make them. And congratulations!

I can understand the rant! It's annoying when people feel that they are above the rules, but more so when they are supported! It's like being Ferris Bueller vs. being his sister. Sorry it went that way.

Thanks - I ended up winning the contest so maybe I should take back the rant!

LOL! Congrats, anyway! : )

Dear Steve,
Great poetic execution, as ever and a good old grumpy rant (fully justifiable) against the iniquities of the scoring system.

Thanks, mate.
Not really a big deal and my poem's in the lead now so the rant is not even justified!

I guess I didn't see that one, but I haven't had much luck at winning. Sometimes I just don't get it either. This was very humorous and breaking rules would sure make it easy. Thanks for sharing.

Winning's easy, don't you know; we cannot hold a grudge.
We're all such fools
To follow rules
When no one acts as judge!
Sounds like you are a bit angry at this person that didn't follow the rules!

Just blowing off a little bit of steam - it has certainly roused a few other people up to complain about their experiences!

Oh, I do agree with you, kiwisteveh. I think entries that don't follow the rules should be disqualified. Your poem is cute and cleverly written. Well done.

Thanks, Sally.
It seems that I have more to worry about from genuine competitors in the contest I was referring to. The one who didn't follow the rules is fading in the vote but my poem is being overhauled by a more worthy chalenger.....

I think there is an even bigger problem with lots of these writing contests.
If you spend lots of member dollars then you get more reads and more votes, no equality for the poor folk.
If you break the rules you should be thrown out of the game, sadly cheating is portrayed by lots of people as 'gamesmanship', but in my mind it's cheating.
Sad, sad world we live in.
Loved the rant by the way, a very funny poem that bounced along beautifully.

Thanks, Des. Yes, I have noticed the inequality aspect as well. Here I was more getting at 'voters' who go for a piece that even the author admits breaks one of the stringent rules.

This is an excellent rant - And makes a point about contest rules, and those who break them - especially on FS where rules get broken all the time and yet, the authors are still rewaraded with the win. I have had a few tough hosts who contacted me to let me know my poem was off the mark and that I had better fix it. I appreciated that - after all we're here to learn. I don't know if a host can actually disqualify an entry, so the miscreant writer's poem or story gets lumped in with the entrants who did follow the rules. Your poem is spot on and cleverly written with its sing-song rhythm. Excellent.

Thank you - I am not sure, but I suspect 'hosts' can't actually disqualify, although I guess they could contact someone and ask them to withdraw. I was more concerned with voters who still go for an entry that does not comply.

Ah, Steve, I surely hope the culprit isn't I. I, too, have encountered some rather questionable ethics, and even more questionable judging. I continue to enter contests, and I try to keep my stardards high, and my expectations low.
I echo your sentiments.
Peace, Lee

Thanks, Lee - definitely not you. The author has been quite open (and apologized to me) but the voters continue to pick the piece that does not comply.

Steve,I know that this is no sop, but I run into this crap all the time, too. I'm glad that you spoke up, but there is no rule that says the voters have to have any brains. More's the pity. Hang in, my friend. Peace, Lee

Clever, Steve. I guess if the win at any cost is the goal, then cheating is justified. There's no doubt some people think that way. I bounced right along with your smart rhymes and rhythm, until the very last phrase. "When no one us will judge!" Oooh, that's awkward! Spoils it for me. It's like falling off the stage.
"We're all such fools
To follow rules
When that's not what they judge!" Or whatever. The present wording threw me.

Sorry to throw you off the stage - you are not the first to query that last line - I can only say that the whole thing only took about five minutes so I must have dropped the ball... fixed now.
Found a new way to cheat today - one of the nominees for poem of the month was only an Australian classic - removed now. At least they recognized the quality!

Good fix! Truly? An actual case of plagerism, or just based on an old Australian classic? I think I read that one. I was impressed and tempted to vote for it.
-
just pinched the whole thing - actually not the first time for this author - last time I just wrote to her and got a 'sorry, I'm so ashamed'. This time I just reported it...

Wow! What nerve. Who needs to win so badly. It was the one I reviewed. I went back to check and it had been removed. I still voted for another one, though. I'm wondering if I'm not too hung up on rules, now, if people get away with such crap for so long! Actually making it to the 'Poem of the Month' voting booths! Wow! What nerve!
