A wonderfully creepy introduction to the manor and it's caretaker. A fun read, Bev. No SPAG or other issues. :) Nancy

Well, this was refreshing a perfectly written chapter tonight. The dialogue was realistic and you kept it moving.
- does Aikido work on dogs? I like the humor of his thoughts.

Hi, lancellot. I tried Aikido for a while, but didn't have the strength for all the kicking which I think would definitely fend off an animal attack. Wish I'd taken it up a lot younger because it was great discipline and quite fascinating.
Appreciate your kind and generous review.

Quite a creepy start to this investigation. I lived in a trailer many years ago and things would fly off shelves at me. I don't think it was the trailer settling like everyone said, because it only happened when I was there alone. Pretty creepy. Enjoyed this chapter, my friend~Debbie

Thanks so much, Debbie, for sharing your experience and for the gracious review. Not much fun when you're at the receiving end of such happenings. :)

Hi, Bev.
What an exciting chapter! Your characters and dialogue are excellent, keeping me hanging on every word. Great imagery as they entered the house of the portrait as the central feature. I could clearly see Jenkins change, his physical features, his mood and sneering grin. Ohh... this is so good and creepy! You've captured such a great vibe of mystery, eeriness and tension. Awesome chapter!

Hello, my friend. I am so very thrilled that you enjoyed this chapter. It's going to be fun to re-edit and add some new elements to the old postings, and your encouragement really helps me feel supported in that. I so appreciate you! Hugs, Bev

Really excellent. You do a great job with the caretaker. It's interesting that he is so in touch with Charles Bellingham and has his portrait. Jenkins is uncooperative, and would probably turn the dog on the investigators if sufficiently provoked. His behavior is strange, but the question is he just drunk or is it some kind of possession? If they have such responses in the caretaker's cottage, what they get in the house will be really be something. I like what you're doing with the language the investigators use. It's so down to earth, in contrast to the seriousness of their investigative work. judi

Judi, I really appreciate your comment about the dialogue. I've been getting some interesting feedback on that, so your words DO warm my heart. I think we grew up reading the same kind of authors and books, like Nancy Drew. The characteristics of the investigators will become more apparent as they face their challenges. Thank you so very much for this generous and most-encouraging review. Hugs, Bev

I have to wonder if the dog belonged to the owner or if he belonged to the caretaker. He seems to be pretty protective of him. It would make senses that they couldn't find Bellingham's body if he were possessing the caretaker. Lots of stuff is going to happen and I hope they can finish their investigation.

There's a lot that's going to happen between now and the end for sure, Lindal. Thanks for the great review. :)

Bev,
I am really enjoying this one. The pace is great and it seems to have a focus more on story than character relationships. Is this one going to be a short story write? I know it is early on in the story, so maybe I am misreading.

Hi, Dallas. This will definitely be a shorter novel. I'm planning in the range of 25 to 30 chapters. It's just getting warmed up, though, and more of the characters' personalities will emerge. Thanks so much for the great review.

Scary but vividly appropriate artwork! I relished the realistic dialog and detailed description of the portrait. The dog's antics added to the tension. Here's to the continuing "rollercoaster ride"! -Joan

It ended too soon! I was reading away, lost in your story, and then POOF! LOL!
I'm loving this, Bev. So, Bellingham is using Porter. Love the 'evilness' of it. Great touch with the poker, and the dog adds another element of fear.
Great work.
Noticed only two itty bitty nits:
Jenkins Porter's voice rose in shrill objection(.)
Mike was trying to figure out what to do when he heard Mia's request(.)
Love Av

Thanks so much, Av. Glad you enjoyed the chapter. Things are going to be moving pretty quickly because I have no intention of spending three years on another novel LoL. Seriously, thanks much for the encouragement and grand review. Corrections made, as well. Love and hugs, Bev
