I wish you the best of luck in the contest. I really enjoyed reading both parts of your story. The division of people by what they do for sport is amazing as it is true. And I never thought of it, but we do all coexist on this site without snipping or snobbery. I do a little of each. The only thing that is beyond my abilities is to rhyme. Couldn't do it if you held a quill pen to my head. I think poems are read more frequently is that many of the stories are continual, and if you are not in at the beginning, its hard to catch up. As for short stories, they are my favorite.

I wish you the best of luck in the contest. I really enjoyed reading both parts of your story. The division of people by what they do for sport is amazing as it is true. And I never thought of it, but we do all coexist on this site without snipping or snobbery. I do a little of each. The only thing that is beyond my abilities is to rhyme. Couldn't do it if you held a quill pen to my head. I think poems are read more frequently is that many of the stories are continual, and if you are not in at the beginning, its hard to catch up. As for short stories, they are my favorite.

I knew the line you quoted was by JJ even though I have not read that actual poem. It was just so cleverly Jude. I too marvel at her ability with words.
I laughed when I read the bit about the Haiku. Some people just don't understand how hard it is to write those short forms - where every syllable counts.
I believe I follow both poets and prose writers in equal measure on here, but I know not every one does. I appreciate a good story easily as much as a good poem, but I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned time restraints. It does take much longer to read and review a story. I have limited my fan base for that very reason; though in truth it creeps up each month.
I want to give my full attention to those I follow and could not possibly if I had a hundred or so, like many do. I just don't know how they find the time to write for themselves.
I have holidayed in the Muskoka's so know the area, and I know of the Oakville Yacht club because I live in Burlington. Small world!
Anyway, you did a great job here in giving your thoughts on poetry, and you certainly defended your genre.

this is very well written with good form and good flow, a great job writing about how poets and short story writers can work so well together on this site, i love to read and write as well, when i shut down the computer, i tell my husband i have to read to relax to go to sleep, he says you've been reading for hours, but reading things on fanstory wakes me up, reading from a paperback puts me to sleep, i wish you the best of luck in the contest

This is a well written essay. I like the thought that poets are like skiers and sailors in that their art form is more of a purest. I enjoy reading and writing both stories, essays, and poetry so I don't have a problem with the co-existance. As you say the poetry is quicker to read and makes the points add up faster.

And since many people review to earn fake bucks to promote their own work, they're going to choose to read several poems for several dollars in the same amount of time to read a story that often is paying no more than each of those poems did.

Yes, but you are a very generous reviewer, who spends countless time helping people perfect their work.. You are absolutely right about the feigned interest in others work, gravitating towards the feature page and dropping impotent and egostistical comments for the whorish fake dllars. It's probably one of the reasons I don't respond to your poetry very often. I've already established my respect and I am a regular visitor to your profile page, but in reading your poetry, I am the taker, shoring up my FS account so that I don't have another fit of madness and charge a ton of money to my American Express account in some mindless and egotistical moment when I get crazy.
But answer me, from a truthful point of view, what is the point if none of it is honest or real? If someone is reading my crap for the sole purpose of banking FS dollars, then expects me to take his contribution more seriously than my own....where does it begin and end?

Hey, I hear you. Luckily, there are enough genuine and helpful reviewers that one listens to them and ignores the others. In 2011 alone I have reported four reviewers to Tom, all of whom were giving identical cut and paste reviews to a 20 or 30 posts on the same day. Each time I was alerted to this because the idiots reviewed 2 of my works and gave them identical reviews, so then I checked out their comments pages to see they were giving EVERYone that review. And since they make it a glowing, flattering review, most people are just thrilled and say thanks a lot. One guy gave the same review to me that he had given to political rants, short stories, novel chapters and other poems. Obviously he was only in it for the money, and I wasn't about to let him get away with stealing it. To balance jerks like that, I have a few dozen people I know and trust, who review me regularly and give sincere feedback. They make the experience worthwhile. :-)

Im grateful for your interest in hat I do. I pay attention to your postings, but do not feel qualfied, and I think I've told you. it doesn't matter what I think, at times you make me smile and at times I just drift away to my beach in the sun. Thanks.

Yes, I think the lessons sit in that portion of your brain that creates the foundation. When the writing starts it filters through some of that, but usually cme fom instinct and also those little fairies that dance around in our brains.

I found my niche as a poet, when I entered a site contest and placed second! I then decided to try my hand at poetry for awhile, and I never really looked back. People can review many more pieces within a given time for the same payouts with poetry as they can with prose, plus, there's a lot more editing most of the time with prose. It's true and frustrating for all prose writers to be sure. I agree with you completely about punctuation as well ... the part I agonize over the most when writing prose, whereas I can get away with all sorts of punctuation allowances in my poetry. It's not really fair is it, but somehow with poetry, the punctuation or lack thereof, becomes part of the pacing within the piece. I thought this contest entry was a perfect conveyance of your message as a prose writer and the co-existence amongst us, plus you gave us a delightful peek into your life ... excellent flow throughout and I loved your creative comparisons. BRAVO and thank you for the mention. I'm honored SE.

I corrected it immediately. And DAMN! I checked it three times!
I have the same challenge with flash fiction, trying to make every word, but as someone who probably runs off at the mouth too often, it's a good discipline. Have a good weekend.
