What a cute story! Is Harley a Jack Russell? I assume that's him in the photo. Most dogs love snow, and I can't wait to get mine to the snow some day (we live in Southern California).
I enjoyed learning about Harley's routine very much. He'll learn to not mind the word "no" by the tone of your voice. Mine certainly do not seem to mind it! Lol.
Well done!
Carol

That was well-written and I enjoyed Harley. The way you told it I was afraid he was getting sick when he didn't want to leave his bed. But he was feeling lazy and wished to sleep a bit longer. Very good. Sincerely Mabaker

Hi MP,
I am sorry for your loss of Harley.
How old was he? What happened to him? The story is a good one.
It was interesting to read. JR's are very smart dogs. They are easy to train to do lots of tricks.
Over all it is a good write.
Best regards,
K River

Thank you for reading and reviewing. Harley was only 3 when they found he had a congenital heart problem. I still miss him every day.

    Hi MP,
It is so hard to loose them at any age. But it is especially hard when they are young. I lost my German Shepherd Cisko 2 days before his 6th birthday.
The thing I discovered though was that each animal doesn't make a difference what type.
When they enter our lives for whatever amount of time creates a special GOD given place within our hearts that is especially just for them. But the neat thing is that there is always room for more. Each one is always there and always separate. My shepherd was a helper dog for my mom. I was forced to get another dog within a month because she needed one. That was how we got Kelly.
She didn't take the place of Cisko. She just made her own place in my heart. She also helped to eased the pain of the loss of Cisko. I lost her a little over a year ago one day before Thanksgiving. I spent over $4,000.00 trying to save her. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Money I was going to use to finish my kitchen. I don't have a kitchen now or Kelly. But Kelly, if she had lived. It would have been worth every penny to save her. I had just lost my other dog River, in May of the same year. I inadvertently poisoned Him. When I gave him all the raisins from my salad. I just didn't know enough not to do that. I was a professional dog trainer for more than 15 year and I still didn't know.
There are all kinds of foods that we eat every day and share with them because they ask, that harms them if they eat it. Any Pork, garlic, artificial sweeteners, chocolate, and onions or foods that have them as ingredients are just a few of the foods that can cause internal harm and death if enough is ingested. There are also lots of plants and flowers in the garden that can do the same thing.
I know how hard it is to loose them but the memories of them are there for a lifetime because each one changes our lives significantly for the rest of our lives. I wrote two poems one about how I got River the other that turned out to be prophetic about our animals waiting for us at Heavens Gate. neither one is posted here but they are posted at my poem site if your interested. Type in:
    poetrypoem/kriver.com
on google click the 2nd one from the top.
You should then see a list of poems.
    The 1st three
    are about dogs.
    Best regards,
    K River

A good chapter of its book that I will have to read some chapters more to define my aptitude for thinking, I liked this one and I see that is marked like recognized work, congratulations

A delightful snow day for Harley! You did a good job describing his reactions to the new experience.
Two minor suggestions for you to consider:
'In spite of the earliness of the hour' sounds a little clunky to me. Possibly 'in spite of the early hour' would work.
In the paragraph where Harley first goes out in the snow, you have used the word bit/bits three times. Perhaps one of them could be snapped (he snapped at the bits)?
This was a fun story to read.

Lucky Harley. I wish I could also have a Master or Mistress to rub the cold off me after a jaunt in snow. You did a great job of making Harley so human. Or maybe it's me who's so puppy-like!

This is one of my favorite reads today, actually in a long time. We had snow last week and my four year old Jack Russell Buffy adored it, it was her first time playing in deep snow and now the weather has turned brighter she is warming herself in the sunshine! It was so lovely reading about this, so heartwarming and lovely, Dogs take up so much of your time but it is totally worth it when they are as loveable as Harley and Buffy :) Love Meia x

Thank you, Meia. I revived this from about 6 years ago. I plan to start writing about dogs again. I loved the feel of these pieces, and I'm not entirely sure why I got away from it. I hope you will enjoy my new stories, too.

Hello :)

I really like this sentence, it was cute: Smelling his food that the Man put out while they were outside, Harley felt his tummy's gladness.

I'm here too for the same reason. Have you taken any classes here? I'm taking 'Novel Middles', with Stacia Ann. She is a professor in California. I'm learning a lot from her. It was 99.00, but worth it!

Things I've learned: Every character matters, so if you have minor characters, they need a role. Have a very good beginning that will catch the eye of an agent, or publisher. Stay away from a novel consisting of short works or poetry--not really popular with agents or publishers. Try to get into the characters and think like them--why would they think this, or do this. Also, don't get discouraged by an agent or publisher that doesn't get back to you--they say they do but in reality, they have so many queries that they must just delete or throw them away (they say they don't but when you don't hear back from them...). Work on the middle and keep it going--keep the momentum up don't let it sag!

Some of these things I learned by sending to agents. I wish you the best of luck--and keep writing! Don't get discouraged and quit--like a wine, you will get better with time!

You reviewed one of my poems, (showing your distain for The Donald) and I took a peek at your profile and clicked on your Harley story.

I found your chapter to be pleasant reading, even though nothing unusual, or even problematical, happens. That, in itself is a worthy accomplishment, and if you invent a few adventures for Hayley i believe your book should do very well. By the way, I think you should say early on that Hayley is a puppy. There's no hint of that until he's puzzled by the snow. He has much awareness for one so young. I'll bet he gets that from you.

Now I'll go back and thank you for commenting on MY stuff.

I'm pleased to meet you, Patty!

Don

Thank you for reading one of my works to compliment me in reading yours! I'm glad you enjoyed Harley's story. This was a revived post from about 6 years ago. Harley has now crossed over the rainbow bridge, but I will be sharing some chapters in the lives of my new furry companions, Howie and Bernie.

The rainbow bridge...I never heard of that one before. It sounds like a lovely place to visit, but I suspect you don't get to come back. You'd better keep a close watch on Bernie and Howie.

This was a cute write about your little man's first encounter with snow. I can see every tilt of his cute head in this story, and with my own brood can really identify with it.

Poor chap, the snow seems to energise them but then they collapse in a heap

hugs

Freda

Thank you for reading and reviewing. The personification of my pets is one of the things I enjoy writing best. I'm glad Harley's story of his first encounter with snow was entertaining.
