My heart goes out to you and to Adam's family.
I can't tell you how many times I came home from work, lifting the cookie jar, and asking, "Where are the cookies."
(The rest of this short story is in past tense so try.... I can't tell you how many times I came home from work, lifted the cookie jar, and asked, "Where are the cookies?"

A lovely story beautifully observed. The death of a child is unnatural - you are so right about that. If this was based on fact, I'm sure Adam would be happy to know how he touched your life. If it wasn't your empathy is impressive. I love the affinity kids have with dogs. I grew up with a German Shepherd called Anton. He was a joy - almost better than a sibling for an only child. x moyramouse

Very much based on fact. I finalized this hours after the funeral. It was great therapy for me. When my German Shepherd died, I can tell you that it felt like a relative died. I could have strangled my MIL when she said, "Well, it's only a dog." Warm regards, Bill

Bill, it had the ring of truth that is why I mentioned it. I'm glad it helped to right about it. Isn't it strange how we write things which are read by strangers but we would never talk about them, revealing our inner selves when we're face to face. All the dogs we have had during our married life (43 years) have been members of the family and were mourned when they died. They were never ' only a dog'. Our two enrich our lives even if they do shed all over the carpet!! x moyramouse

You made me cry with that final paragraph, Bill - I can just see Abbey and Adam enjoying a round of cookies together. By the way, what makes a cookie a Neiman Marcus cookie?
What a great story. You have this wonderfully warm narrative voice. I am so very sorry you lost your young friend. Brooke

There's a great story about the Neiman Marcus cookie. It is basically chocalate chips and nuts, more like a chocolate chip cookie on steriods. Years ago, a Neiman Marcus patron bought some at their coffee shop. She asked for the recipe and was told sure, it cost $699. They added to her bill. She had assumed six dollars and ninety-nine cents, Nope, $699.00 They wouldn't give her a refund, so she posted the recipe on the internet. Thanks for reading and your kind words. Writing this story was great therapy for me. If I brought tears to your eyes, you should have heard some of his classmates sharing their memories. If that group could write narratives and post to FS, the rest of us would look like amateurs. Bill

What a moving, loving tribute. It is so hard to write such an accolade without getting maudlin, but you have a deft hand. This is sad, sweet, funny, and painful. Yet, by the end, you've managed to make this reader feel at peace with the tragedy. Thanks so much for a touching and wonderful read.

Today, when the FS site popped up on my screen and I saw a story with your name on it, like a child, mentally my mind yelled, "Oh, goodie." 'Cause I knew it would be good. Yet, now that I finished reading your wonderful, woeful tale - tears stream from both eyes.
Years ago, I lost a child. Thus, I understand how you feel. .... I'm sorry this had to happen, Bill. And be assured, my prayers will be with you.
You have my deepest sympathy and love. Jonathon

Thanks for reading Jonathan and for your kind words of support. My tears flowed during the funeral when some of Adam's schoolmates spoke. If they could capture their sensitivity and depth on FS, the rest of us might as well quite writing. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. Regards, Bill

Bill, I'm so sorry you lost your friend. I've no doubt Adam touched the hearts of many, many people, including mine from reading about him. I'm so glad you stopped to write about your friendship with such a lovely boy because those type of friendships seem so rare today.
Hugs,
Lola

Hi Lola - the funeral was a little over three hours ago, and some of his school mates said some things. I'm a tough old coot, but I cryed like a baby. If those young kids could transfer the emotion and love to stories on FS, the rest of us might as well quit. Hugs back .... Bill

Bill, that's a great idea. Is there some way you can alert them to this site?
I don't blame you at all for crying, it's the decent thing to do.

Hi Bill! I really enjoyed reading this tender story. It's very saddening to hear of the loss of your young friend; I imagine you intentionally refrained from mentioning the cause of Adam's death. Anyway, you related the story very skillfully. It flowed very smoothly through well-crafted imagery and emotion, with the message proceeding very nicely through the time-line you established for the story. Andy

Hi Andy - everything started out innocent enough. Adam came down with flu, but apparently had some underlying mitachondrial problems as well. He went fast. I appreciate your kind words. Bill

This was so personally written that it hurt to read it. I could see Adam so clearly through your eyes. I could feel your attachment to him as well.
I appreciate the positive way you presented this story, too. It underlines the beauty we can hold in spite of the dark places, and it does so without preaching.
