Hi bhogg,

I would defy anyone who could read this touching story with a dry eye. I can't help but wonder why Adam died at such a young age. I am sorry you lost Abbey too but I like that you feel they are in heaven together. I know this must have been a difficult story to write but it can also be very healing. Well done, and my best to you and your wife....chey

Hi Chey - Adam was one of the two people so far to die from influenza in the State of NC this year. I think there were some underlying health problems as well. Talk about dry eye, at the funeral, some of Adams classmates spoke. I'm a tough old coot, but I didn't even try to hide my tears. Thanks for reading and for your kind words.

Even though this is a very sad story which actually happened in your life it also made me smile a couple of times.

The last bit were you told us that Abbey will be their to meet dear Adam was so touching, I have tears looming.

My sympathy to you, your wife and his family.

Marcii

What an incredibly sweet tale with such a heartbreaking end.

The piece itself is written brilliantly and you bring forth Adam in such a way it's as if the readers where privileged enough to know him themselves.

I am so extremely sorry for your loss my friend xox

This is a very sweet tribute, by way of an endearing story. It isn't very often that we have to mourn the death of a young friend, and I'm so sorry for this author's loss.

Nicely done.

Hi, Bill:

As I promised you, I read this last night, but didn't have time to reveiw it because the grandkids dropped in and spent the night.

I liked this piece very much. Despite the double losses of Adam and Abbey, the essay still imparted a meaningful and uplifting story about lasting friendships and the loyalty that develops within such associations of sincere souls. You depicted a friendship between a man, a boy and a dog with such introspective clarity, and without the usual maudlin overtones writers often bring to such stories, that it kept me interested from beginning to end. I was there in the moment alongside you, watching and laughing when Adam found the snake. You are a master at adding such funny little moments into your stories at just the right moments.

I've said it dozens of times before, so I won't say it again, but your writing reminds me so much of a writer I admire so much. Take that as the compliment I intend it to be, Bill, because I admire how you always write with such such humour, and yet also such peaceful calmness that imparts deep and lasting meaning to even the most commonplace moments of our lives.

You are truly one of the best writers at FS, and I am ashamed of myself for not reading and reviewing your work more often. I'll have to work on that because it's me that missing out.

Great story telling in this piece. You've managed to keep a nice sentence structure while keeping a solid brevity in your lines. This allows the reader's mind and eyes to breath with the piece making this an enjoyable read. Sean

Ah, that's sad, Bill. Sorry about your young friend. You're a bit of a practical joker, uh?
Yes, it sort of throws the world into a tailspin to have a child pre-decease us. It's just not the way things were meant to be.
Good write, b. Well done, bringing up the memories that formed the relationship. I enjoyed reading it.

A moving story, and I love the humorous touches, and the way you describe simply everyday events to remember Adam.
One or two issues with punctuation - for example some of the 'sentances' are not actually complete sentances - such as:
'Rocky Mount is a difficult destination. Just darn hard to meet people, and no one was knocking on our door.

No one, that is, but Adam.'
So perhaps a little adjustment to the punctuation - but apart from that - I really like this.

Thanks for reading Joanna - I appreciate the feedback. I recognized the sentences as fragments, but chose to shorten them for added punch. Regards, Bill
