Patty,
This is another enjoyable chapter, and Simba is one arrogant cat - perfect for the breed.
I enjoyed reading this post and found a pair of nits:
"He laid [lays, or holds] his ears flat against his head and lays [lies] down with his eyes peering through the door."

Thank you for staying with Harley's saga. I have a difficult time with lay/lie and past tense, too. I've looked it up several times and still can't get it right - THANK YOU for helping with it. ~patty~

It sounds like all three of the "children" are having the time of their lives. Aren't Simba and Leo going to be surprised on the day that Harley gets that door open? :D What fun! Nancy

Uh oh! Good thing, he doesn't have thumbs! Harley has figured out how to 'escape' from his playpen, and he can leap and clear the lowest of the babygates. He is starting to catch on to the whole housebreaking thing, so the cats are in for a HUGE surprise that he will have full run of the house fairly soon! (I may have to let them have the bedroom - only fair!) Thank you for continuing to read Harley's saga. Your kind words and remarks are greatly appreciated. ~patty~

This is turning into quite a story. Harley is the underdog (excuse the expression.) This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for an easy read.

The descriptions in this story make it possible for the reader to be right there in your living room, watching the antics of your pets. Cute story.

What a great game that is. I enjoyed Simba's story just as much as Leo's. It's interesting to see how all these relationships are playing out. You must be having a wonderful time watching all this. One little thing: In the paragraph beginning "He ambles..." you write "he...lays down". Did you mean to write he LIES down? I'm looking forward to the next adventure.

When I was around 12, I guess, I read all of Terhune's books :-) I have not thought of that name in years.
Great warm humor in statements like - it is such a chore to have long, luxurious, silken fur :-)
amble/spy/beseech/lap/peer - great verb choices and excellent descriptive detail make the scene come alive
I love the personalities that emerge :-) Brooke

This story really cat my eye because of the names of the "protagonists". I once had a cat named Simba, and I think I love cats so much because I am a Leo -- LOL!
I really enjoyed your story about the period of adjustment that occurs when a new housemate appears because it is SO absolutely true. My sister has four adult cats and a high energy, eight months old Pomeranian. The cats approach him, and he chases them, thinking they want to play. If they didn't run from them, he wouldn't pursue. She has sent me some priceless email pictures of these encounters.
Every pet owner, especially if he/she has cat(s) and dog(s) will relate to this. Children who can read will enjoy it because it doesn't talk down to them. I'm approaching official "senior" designation (I tell people who ask me how old I am that I am 64 going on 11!), and I laughed out loud at a couple of spots, especially the huge energy expenditure by Harley while the cats did their hiss and arch routine from the safety of the other side of the glass.
And, of course, this is very well written. I could visualize it all as though I were watching a short film. Camera fade on Harley on his favourite blankie!
I noticed that this is the sixth chapter of a book (yours, too, has a prologue!). I will have to read what I've missed.
Good job.

I'm sure it has been. One little, squirming, energetic, and utterly adoroable critter can do that, for sure.

These three will eventually get on famously it always takes time for new faces to be excepted.
Certainly it sounds like Harley wont let anything stand in the way of friendship.
Very enjoyable Patty.
Best wishes.

What a keen eye you have, Patty, and how well you write from the varying POVs of cats and puppy. I know this scenario well, having once had 2 dogs and 8 cats. Having a large garden certainly helped. Looking forward to more.
