This wonderful story tells as much about your first marriage as it does about your grandmother.
Taking responsibility for her declining years (I hate that word, too, but can't think of a more suitable one), something you did out of love, was an incredible gift you gave to everyone concerned, has surely earned you a lot of points, and a ton of self-respect, even if your then wife could have been more compassionate. The 'throw-away line' when your father asked what the good news was, is a gem.

Very touching tribut to your grandmother, Bill. "Oh, she thought I was you". OMG. Laughed out loud at that one. Nice mix of humor and down-home narrative. I almost feel like I knew your grandmother.

The writing itself looks very well-polished. A couple of possible glitches:

full time (I've always seen this hyphenated, but not sure if it can go either way)
told her, "grandma, (Grandma)

Nice job as always Bill. I got a feeling your grandmother would have loved this even with the references to her occasional stubborness. That seems to be an integral part of her character. Grat job.

Thanks for reading Jack and for your kind feedback. I'll check out the "grandma". If it follows a pronoun, it should certainly be lower case. It's funny, I do try and stretch myself and write fiction, but I'm much more comfortable with non-fiction.

Not only do you have the memories for your whole grandmother's life that you were apart, but you will treasure those memories for your whole life time. Whatever money could purchase will lose its value when a new improved item comes on the market. Nothing can improve on the experiences that you have had with a loved one. They are the best. Unfortunately some people can't understand that. I enjoyed your musing.

Thank you Nancy - first for reading and then your kind comments. I was sitting here (all alone tonight) on the family property and thought of my grandmother. As I'm apt to do, I wrote a story. Warm regards, Bill

Thanks for really making my evening. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed your story. You tell it beautifully and it was an honour to be acquainted (if only through this ) with your grandmother. It sounds like you're the man with a golden heart. One wonders how you managed to marry someone just the opposite the first time. Anyway, great story!

You sure did friend. There are things money and land cannot buy. The heritage is worth so much more than anyone can imagine. You indeed inherited a good one it sounds like. Thanks for the story.

I can see why you refer to her as your "es." I probably would have referred to her as my "dearly departed." I enjoyed your write and understand your decision.

You're welcome, Bill. My Father was born in 1892 and mother in 1906. I only met one of my four grandparents. I had thirteen siblings. Now I have ten. The youngest is sixty-four, oldest 83. I lost a brother at Thanksgiving time. I tell people Death is an old friend.Even a serious write needs humor. As for my old friend, I'm dying to meet him. Charlie

Your story is from the heart, it made me tearful and at the same time appreciative of the treasure you got, "A lifetime of memories." We all have our sweet memories when it ocmes to our relationships with our parents and or grandparents. Your story is a lesson to us that life is more than materialism.

Oh sighhh guy. What an awesome story. Your grandmother would love it I am sure. I did and love the love I read about in it too. Your heart is as big as the universe, Bill. You told this well and with pride. I love it.
