Oooo... Spooky. Very appropriate and scary for the coming Hallowed Evening. I liked the meter of this poem and the repeating word at the start of the 1st three lines in each verse. Makes a strong impact and triples the chills. Rose.

Beware when nightmares in disguise
paint black your fairest dreams.

'' MUUUM heelp ghosts! ''
Ah the good old childhood days!

We don't have Halloween here pearl and it is so disappointing my friend. I actually took your poem from two angles ... the first as an outline of the yearly pilgrimage the young ghosts and ghoulies make when they dress up and attempt to scare the crap out of everybody...all while demanding candy! LOL
But also from an eerier perspective which is possibly what you were talking about and the monsters that lurk in the darkness, ready to claim our souls if we let them.
I don't get into spooky stuff so I tried to take a light hearted angle but found myself reading it again with a more sinister twist.
I loved this write, it was quite different from what we normally see content wise and nice to see Brooke enjoys Halloween.
My absolute fave two lines were these cleverly constructed ones:
"Beware when nightmares in disguise
paint black your fairest dreams."
That is such a clever description, I also liked the mention of the banshee wailing and of course the vulture in its flight.
Top job and kudos to you on Halloween my friend.
Don't let the ghoulies get ya! LOL
Cheers closet xoxo

Phillippa, I did not have the little trick or treaters in mind when I wrote this - I was more thinking about those scary "monsters" that lurk in the shadows. I love spooky stuff in poetry and novels and movies and such because it isn't real - I enjoy being scared for a little while, knowing I am actually safe :-) Thanks so much for your review! Brooke :-)

This was most enjoyable, Brooke. I like this part -

Keep watch when you commit foul sins
lest torment should you seek.

This is such a good warning. I appreciate all your poem, but these couple of lines stood out. thanks for sharing your marvellous work. Lois

Love the sing-song meter (this would wotk besutifully as an intoned reading behind a montage of dark imagery). You've captured both the macabre and the whimsy of modern halloween with this one, Brooke. It made me smile :-)

What a thoroughly spooky poem that sounds just right for this time of year. The vultures feed on carcasses and you never want to get caught as a carcass!

Fun stuff, Brooke. Yep, all the ghosts and goblins are about to come out of the closets again. I think yours is the first one of the season. It's great, Brooke. But I had to check the author again. Didn't really sound like you for a bit. Fun, though. I enjoyed it.

I love haunted houses and horror movies because I am able to suspend my disbelief long enough to feel scared whilst all the while knowing it will soon be over and I'll still be safe :-) Thanks, Patricia :-) Brooke
