The first paragraph of an expository essay must state the topic of the essay. In this case, the topic is "Why Do I Write Poetry." You did state your reasons, but not in a clearly defined manner. To paraphrase, "up from my many valleys of death, up from the sum of my wants,up from the totalness of my weaknesses" tells me very little about why you write.

What an inspiration for writing.
The 23rd Psalm was my Grandmother's favourite as well.
As on of the most popular songs it is easy to see it's effect throughout your whole entry.
The Shepherd is certainly helping you find green pastures.

Good insight to compare writing poetry with the 23rd psalm! I like..."my freckled fingers feel the call to". It's the alliteration! The details brought out seem genuine and true. I enjoyed this poem.

I like that this entry has a very poetic feel to it, in keeping with the question of why you write poetry. I feel you've allowed the reader into the depths of what drives your poetry. My only critique is the following sentence:
"I grasp it light" should be "I grasp it lightly"
