I knew you could, get the rules, I mean! Many thanks for the kudos. You should paint your version of this lady in your spare time--I can almost visualize your interpretation and would be delighted to see it in reality!! You are so fortunate to have such a dedicated and brilliant teacher. BTW, William O'Daly, who translates Neruda, says every poet should translate others! Thank you for sharing your research before we read the sonnet, so that we had the proper context for better understanding and appreciating it. As a fascinating aside, I just returned from the Aztec exhibit at the Getty Museum, so your work resonated on that level as well. (Four paragraphs before the poem, "able" got mangled by Evil Eddie.) The poem certainly captures her disdain for her suitors. I admired the way you were able to capture the rhymes in English--a very difficult task. I was delighted to learn about this incredible woman, who ultimately is recognized as the first great poet of Spanish America--it is very satisfying to know that she also is portrayed on the 200 peso note. Thank you for posting this work, which is like taking a short course in an important, historic figure.

I am so pleased you enjoyed this. This was the most difficult assignment I have ever had to do. My teacher is brilliant and opened my eyes to poetry beyond my wildest imagination and expectation. He certainly has instilled the desire to learn Spanish fluently so I can read more of this woman's amazing work.

I am so glad you liked this. Yes, my Spanish classes are becoming a full time job but I am learning so much about the culture and people it is really worth it. Now if I could just learn to speak/read Spanish, my life would be compete!

I've read so much of her work when I was in College. She is a true inspiration and a wonderful writer. And it's been a long while since I've read her work. Now, I have to go dig her out of my Spanish Literature pile and read her again.
You did a great job with this.
You made it very interesting.
And it was very clear, and easy to understand.

A few spags: In the title you have Inez, then, in other places you have Ines, I'm pretty sure it's Inez but it's been a while, so maybe you are right with Ines, either way, you should stick to one way.
In some places you also have Sor Juan when it should be Sor Juana
and the last line you have Spanish American, so you should either say, first great Spanish American poet, or the first great poet of Spanish America
2nd line 4th paragraph: Isabe Ramieriz I think should be Isabel Ramirez.

I just love her too. She has inspired me to learn more Spanish just so I can read more of her amazing work. I find it awesome that she was able to do what she did at a time when things like that just were not done! thanks for catching the spags too.

Oh, and it is so much better to read her work in the original Spanish than in English, you'll see, the more Spanish you learn, the more you'll see that once you know the language and the culture, it is better to read literature in the original language because a lot of little things can not be translated.

I agree. Translating this was very hard and I know you loose a lot that way. It is always better to read anything in the original language.

oh, just wait until you can read Don Quijote de la Mancha by Cervantes. Now, he is probably the best writer ever, and if you can read it in Spanish you can see why. You can still see it in English, but you miss a lot of the artistry.

Yes, my teacher is amazing and I just love his approach. No school books and silly sentences to write out. I am learning Spanish and even better Mexico's history and wonderful culture too.

I love reading about the country of my birth. Sad to say I don't know much of it but I hope to remedy that. What a great story about Sor Juana. What a great writer. I never heard of that word "Sor". And I believe you mean "yearn" in the second line.

Yes, it definitely does. I just found it amazing that in the 1600's she was able to accomplish her dream, even if it did require entering a convent to do it.
