Thank goodness my next batch of sixes came up before I hit this, Ann! It's so tender and so telling. I particularly like your description of your father kissing your mother, and the way he handled her need to rest after their hour of talking. You wrote about that journey to Missouri last year or so, didn't you? I'm sure I remember reading about it.

The only thing that comes close to being a nit may not be - just when your father says, "I just want about a-half of cup." Is that the idiom, or would it be "of a cup?"

Thank you for posting this fine piece. It speaks of so much, which I can't really put down here without writing an essay, which would be tedious (for you, I mean, lol).

Good luck in the contest!

Louise

What a great entry for the father's day contest. I thought this was an excellent submission. Your father apparently had some real values and deep love for his family. You should do well with this submission...Gideon

I can see the kindness in his face - what a lovely picture, Ann - this story is just beautiful - I have tears welling up in my eyes - what a lovely relationship your parents must have had for her to want to look her best for him up until the end - and what he did to allow her that dignity, how he made it possible for her to stay a desirable wife and a person he could set a spell with - well, like I said, my tears are welled up in my eyes still. Brooke :-)

Thanks so much, Bob. My dad was a complex man and I wanted to illustrate one side of him in this story. I'm glad you read it and took the time to comment. ann

A lovely story. I liked how the father made no mention of the mother's condition, just accepted her being moved around as normal.

Liked these lines: You need to remember, when you stop looking good enough to come home to, they'll stop coming home." LOL!!!

Good job!

It was the 50's! Men thought they were kings and women tried to figure out how to keep them thinking that. lol. Thanks so much for reading and commenting. I appreciate both and your time in sharing your thoughts. ann

Oops, I had to re - edit this, forgot to wish you luck for the contest- all the best!!

This is my favourite genre of reading. I think reading about others is always an inspiration and this write about your dad is no exception. This is touching tribute to your dad - he's well deserving of it.

I would rub a little "Nair" on her upper lip to be sure there was no trace of a mustache
I love this detailing, it gives this piece that true to life, down to Earth feel I so enjoy in a story.

I've learned a lot from all the nuances that go with it.
Sometimes due to age or the rush of life, we don't see the "nuances" behind words or actions. I think you've done a brilliant job in conveying this point.

I marveled at how Mama blossomed when Daddy talked with her.
ggod choice in using "blossomed" , full of life, beauty, nurtured by your dad's love.

In an hour or so, Mama began to droop a bit. Without missing a beat, Daddy took his cue.

"Mary, I'm going to put these coffee cups up. I'm a little tired today, and I think I'll lie down for spell if you don't mind. Wanna join me?"
Wonderful showing dialogue. He's a tender man.

I've come to recognize Daddy's courage and love in allowing Mama to keep her dignity even at the lowest point in her life. He treated her, not as an invalid, but as his partner.
He allowed her the joy of being his wife until she couldn't be anymore. At the time, I didn't realize how difficult that was. I do now and I admire him for it.
Dying with dignity is hard to achieve especially and I admire your dad for being able to give that to your mum.

Hi, Ann, reading this story makes my eyes water a bit. I admire your parents so much, both your mother and your father. I love the part when your father took the cue and told her he was tired, so your mother preserve her 'dignity' in her role as a wife. I know this wonderful episode and their love for each other would stay unnoticed unless one have perceptive eyes like yours, Ann...

This is simply outstanding. You handle the story of your Mama's decline with as much dignity, love and respect as your Daddy did. I wanted to keep reading. This is real life, real stories about real people, and it should be told. SUPERB! :)
