What a beautiful story, told with tenderness and the understanding of years. They obviously had a wonderful caring and mutually respectful relationship.

What a nice thing to say! I don't get to visit fanstory as much as I once did and to check in to find a 6 star rating really makes my day. Thank you so very, very much. ann

Tender, filled with love and the joy of marriage that overcame illness and despair.
Your writing brings it alive. You use words wonderfully well in setting the stage and creating the scene.
Very very well done.

This is SO sweet, and makes me want to try harder to make my marriage just that much better. It's the FEELING-not the looking-so very true. Thank you for this glimpse of your father.

Thank you very much. My dad was a complicated man, but aren't we all! ann

When I started reading your piece the dialogue seemed insignificant. That changed quickly and I realized how signifcant the insignificant can be. You've captured your parents love for each other so well and your father's specialness. The picture is a nice added touch.
It's a moving, weel written story.

My, oh my, you are a beautifully gifted storyteller. I only wish I could have heard you read it aloud, as I am sure all the character and dialect that is evident in your writing would spring to life off the page. It is one story I can relate to. Even though this was a couple of generations ago, I am a wife who makes a point of looking good for my husband when he gets home, even on days my rheumatoid arthritis gets the best of me. And I love you you painted such a loving husband who I am sure struggled to make sure his dying wife maintained her dignity. Excellent read.

Annmuma, this is such a moving story. it gave me goose bumps and brought tears to my eyes. The eyes of a child never quite understands the interactions nor appreciates the wisdom of love's actions, until we reach a emotional level of understanding. You have conveyed this quite well in your moving emotive story. Your dad must have been such a selfless, loving ,wise, compassionate person and your mom..how beautiful and wise she was..thank you for sharing..jlsavell

Thank you for such a kind and generous review. Were my dad still living, he would have had his 115 birthday last Sunday. Even though it was a somewhat sad summer, some of my favorite memories come from that summer. I love to take them out now and then and enjoy them one more time. ann

Beautifully written story Ann that brought tears to my eyes. Read it twice and cried even more. My mother died when she was 44 of colon cancer. She was the mother of four and the love of my father's life (they married when they were 19!). I watched my father fall apart as she was dying of this dreadful disease. And, she always remained strong for all of us...Poignant piece...Sue

Reading your review brought tears to my eyes. It is difficult to watch one's mom die and one's parents' relationship struggle as they say good-bye. The blessing is that we are all stronger for it and had the opportunity to learn so much from the experience. (Personally, I forego that learning, if given the option. lol) thanks so much, Sue, for reading and commenting. ann

It is so impressive the dignity with which this couple faced illness and ultimately, the death of one of them. The way he treats her says everything about the tremendous love of your mom and dad. You managed to freeze the moment of those summer afternoons on the porch with gifted words:
" often settled on the top step to listen as they chatted. Even at that young age, I marveled at how Mama blossomed when Daddy talked with her. They discussed politics, the neighbors, the railroad, the cows, the chickens, whether or not they should put in a fall garden and the next possible labor strike which always seemed to be looming on the horizon. Nice presentation you have here--memorable and emotional. I like the photo you've chosen to display, drawing forth the binging of a new generation. Well written story for the contest. Good luck.
