How can one objectively review a piece this personal? I can identify. I have renewed ties with my best friend after a long LONG time apart, feeling angry and betrayed. Sometimes actions don't matter in the face of love.
Will you call her? Perhaps she needs you too. Perhaps your expression of forgiveness will help.

This is a sad story about betrayal and forgiveness. I especially liked the lines "Time buries wounds, until a word spoken, a whiff of memory, tears open the wound, and the pain surfaces as though time itself dissolved into yesterday"
"The road to each other's homes never seemed too long." seemed to be literal and metaphorical - slight suggestion, change "other's" to others
one part I did not understand was "as their honorary aunt, was their stepmother"; it didn't flow smoothly to me. However, the point I gathered from this story was that a new perspective can change everything. - JeJo

I admire you for forgiving her, or at least accepting and moving on. I doubt if I could have. Your story is very well written, held my interest till the end, not just because of its structure (excellent) but what it says about you.
