This poem gave me goosebumps with it's realism. It is so sad that we have not learned from our past errors in war. Nine decades from now we will probably be recovering bodies of our soldiers of today.

Another mystery of war.
Why did six thousand men die that night.
Six thousand lives not lived one minute longer ... families shattered ... hearts broken.
It is fascinating that they are now going to identity the men.
Would that there were no remains for them to have to identify.

This is a dramatic poetic account of some World War I history I was unaware of. How tragic if only 200 out of 6,000 made it in that battle. Best regards, Jeanie Mercer

This is the very first war poem I've read on this site and I must say that I'm glad I took the time to read this one! It is hauntingly beautiful and the imagery is very vivid. Excellent poem!

Most of us are lucky enough to not be able to imagine what it must be like to walk, under orders, in to almost certain death, watching our friends die around us - your poem helps us imagine this well, and reminds us that this really did happen.

In this poem you have forcefully presented the devastation of war in loss of life. Rhyming fails in some of the couplets which disrupts the flow for the reader.
I did notice this item to consider for editing:
Two hundred soldiers, did made it up there today.
(Two hundred soldiers made it up there today.)

Well written Gary. I'm always saying to friends imagine what it was like during the 2 world wars when 100s of thousands of people would be lieing there dead in fields, it must have been horrific.
We don't realize how lucky we are.
A good description of a battle cry, very creative and imaginative.

We don't realize how lucky we are.
