That was the most charming story I've read in awhile. Very well done. I was charmed by this unusual friendship. With the father gone and brothers being brothers Mr Verge & Rabbit were friends by default I loved it! Keep writing

Thanks for reading and I'm glad you enjoyed. There is a follow up story called Virge and the Watermelon Caper. I hope you get the chance to read as well.

Dear bhogg,
This is fantastic, very clever - comparing the expanse of life to bookends.
Love the part about the boy immitating the walk.
The dialogue is excellent - really brings warmth to the story and creates the bond between Virge and Rabbit - tells us a lot about who Virge is inside. You've an excellent grasp on writing the local dialect.
Tears are running down my cheeks at this ending. Really well done. Good luck with the contest.

Hi Carlene - sure didn't mean to make you cry, but as I point out in the story, I cried when writing (wasn't really allergies!)

Perfect in every way. The Characters are realistic and you give great descriptions, The setting is perfect for the story. I feel this story is true rather than fiction as I live in the south and there have probably been many Rabbits and Virgie. Very Good writing. Anne 1204

Beautifully written piece. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story about true friendship and the simple but effective wisdom shared therein. This work reminds me of Joel Chandler Harris' stories. As a recent retiree from New Jersey, I have come to love living in Georgia. Best wishes.

I'm so glad that you enjoyed. I remember sitting on my grandmother's couch and her reading Joel Chandler Harris to me. It was a signed copy - sure wish I had it!

I have an unsigned copy from the late 1800s that I purchased on e-Bay. I got this after visiting the little cabin (a tourist spot honoring Harris) in Eatonton, GA.

Yep - I'm jealous. The shame is that I know where the book I was talkiing about is, but is tied up with family. Right now it is probably bug eaten and ruined....

Looks like o.k. grammar to me. But then I was raised in Tennessee in the 1940s and 1950s. My bookshelf of life is overflowing. Lots of shelves, but now books on the floor, table and dang near everywhere. I suspect we are both adding some of the finest volumns in the latter years. Best to you in the contest.

This is a heartwarming story which I throughly enjoyed reading. I love the non fiction best and being from the South myself, (Mississippi) I've known people who were a lot like Verge. The friendship make a wonderful memories.

Wonderful story you've told with great pacing and enjoyable dialogue.
He had on a pair of blue denim overall's, (overalls) a long sleeve blue and white striped cotton shirt, a rail-road (railroad) engineers (engineer's) cap
with all my family, (change comma to semicolon) even my brothers were
lookin aroun to see who you talkin too." (to)
through that mater (matter) and down through dat
I looked up as Virge's niece Carrie, (if he had only one niece, comma goes before and after her name. If more than one niece, no commas before or after.) walked over.
Inside, (remove comma) (was) a small square box and a note.

Nice piece of biographical fiction. A well-deserved entry into the story of the month contest. Your style is excellent, and you clearly illustrate the relationship between you and Virgil. I really liked the fishing and living analogy where you shouldn't take more than you need. Strong ending, the emotion was evident so the allergies ending was a nice touch.
