blind author - A beautiful love poem you have written. My dad was career military and I can just imagine him thinking similar thoughts during Vietnam. Well written with good flow and rhyme. Good luck in the contest.

Simply beautiful writing on a most heart wrenching topic that too many of our citizens have become a part of. Every word is touched with the pain and fear of war's devastating effects on our culture. Fantastic inner rhymes drive the message home.
My hat is off to you.

This message is very heart wrenching. You can hear the longing, the hunger to be back with the one he loves. Yet, he is fearful of not returning.

What a loss for both of them if he doesn't return. - Thesis

Oh MissMerri, this poem is heart wrenching. It comes across as a real love letter from a soldier. Your descriptions of missing the one he left behind and the honesty of a mistake made is so very realistic.

"Though there's blood on my shirt, nothing equals the hurt
of knowing your love for me's gone."

This seems like a winner to me.

Don't normally read poetry on here but I have a strong affiliation with the military and have people close tome over there their. This is a very nice piece which captures the thoughts of a serviceperson very well. We don't realise how hard it is for those heroes who are out there so we dont have to be. Good work.

I too have great love and respect for our military, and am incredibly proud of what they do all over the world. Thank you for reading and sharing your comments.

This is a good piece of verse,
albeit so sorrowful -
the words, rhythm and rhyme
flowing smoothly throughout.

Good luck with the contest, my friend.
Margaret.

OMG, this is beautiful, so romantic and yet so sad. I was almost weeping as I read your poem. I found myself wishing for the letter/poem to reach the intended person it was written for. Very moving.

This is a deeply moving poem, and I'm sure it reflects the feelings of many a soldier. It reads smoothly, with good cadence and rhyme. The message comes through loud and clear. I think this will be a strong contender in the contest. Mary

Very well done!

In moments of life and death, crisis ... all that is false drops away.

You have expressed that so well here.

I especially liked:The bullets are flying around me.
I've been chasing Al-Qaeda since dawn.
Though there's blood on my shirt, nothing equals the hurt
of knowing your love for me's gone.
