'Sympathy/empathy is a good place to start, but sympathy alone does not feed a billion people.' This is a very true statement and I know I am very guilty as I am sure most American's are. I pray that many of the governments of the third world countries would change when money and food arrived it would go to the people and not be taken by the people in charge. I wish I could come up with a solution for their greed.

Yes, people need to not only feel sympathetic, but must DO something about it.

Your poem is sad and stirring.
Thank you for the author notes. Very informative and awakening.

You were able to give a very strong message in this poem with such few words. It was touching. I can picture the faces of hunger.

Beautiful poem Brooke, and what a picture to add to it. I just read thathere in Brazil, nearly 25% of food that is produced is thrown away daily! One quarter! it blows my mind and makes me wonder what the percentages are elsewhere.

It boggles the mind that tons of food go to waste in some countries while people's bodies literally waste away in others. Thanks so much, Shea. Brooke

Brooke, this is definitely
reflective on the world
situation and all who are
suffering from hunger regardless
of where they are. Might I suggest
a comma between "stare with stupor(,)filled with need"
my reason is that without the slight pause
it read a bit clumsily for me. Still,
a very well done poem with a
good message. Lora

Your writings have such emotional
appeal, written in quiet tones that
cry out from the page in loud tones
that may yet one day shake the world
into actionable responses that will
make a difference.
As always, well done

A reflection of your volunteer work with the hungry, Brooke. I often wonder what awe those who are hungry would view a picture like that, or the vast amount of food we waste every day in this country. Excellent poem.

Thank you, Karyn - I think one of the worst parts about being poor in this country is those in dire need live within blocks sometimes of those with unlimited resources. Children are bussed to schools where their classmates have multiple game systems and every electronic device known to man not to mention designer clothes and shoes, and they go home to squalor. At least in many third world countries those in need live only among others in need and are not taunted every day by vast riches. Where I live the worst drug/prostitution/rat-infested neighborhoods are often only a mile or two from McMansions. Now I'm on a rant. LOL Brooke

This is a simple, yet profound little poem. It is so true that the serious needs of so many people cannot be met by sympathy alone. In the case of Haiti, even the abundance of money poured out to help, is seeming to take a long time to meet the needs. Your well-phrased naani is so thought-provoking and heart-rending at the same time. Nicely done!
