Hi deb, I can really relate to what you mean here. I miss all those too. Nowadays, even when I return to my mother's, my birthplace, the situation is no longer the same. I hardly hear a rooster crow. We used to rear them and chickens, now no more. The little ones now stare in wonder at any farm animals they come across. Nice, nostalgic read.

It's funny how those things slip away and we don't notice until something brings it to our attention, isn't it. Sad that the little ones will grow up without all that cool stuff. Thanks for reading, and blessings, Deb

I enjoyed this poem.
I like the nostalgic look at the beautiful countryside.
I found it easy to imagine the rooster crowing, the smell of the hay, and the beauty of a midnight sky.
Thanks for sharing your work.
Michael

What a beautiful write!!!

Love your opening stanza:

I miss the sound of rooster crow
as darkness flees and soft winds blow.
I miss the sound of rooster crow
First thing in the morning.

You expressed you love for the wonders of nature so well.

Looking forward to seeing you post some on the same theme about the nature in your new environs.

This work has reached the exceptional level

I know what you mean, Deb. I used to go to my older sister and brother -in-law's farm starting when I was around eight and on into my early teens. I loved the country - the things - you mention in this beautiful poem. This should live on for eternity - somewhere. Hope it makes it into the "big time". It sure should.

Love to you and yours,

Marge.

Deb, I love the structure of this poem - the way you use the repeating line and the parallel way you reflect on three different times of day - what a wonderfully nostalgic look at your memories of childhood home - this is just beautiful. Brooke :-)

Lovely and musical in flow and cadence. i enjoyed the simple imagery and gentle sense of country-side in the imagery employed here. In this one it works fine using minimal end-line punctuaiton. Good job and no nits. this sounds almost like a song~ So lyrical.
Nicely presented too.

Love, rd

Thanks Rama. Appreciate your kind review.
Saw your name in the winner bracket a bit back and meant to PM congratz, but was attending to sick daddy-in-law and am not sure I did. Either way, CONGRATZ!

Well, he's better in the bigger sense of better. He passed away Jan. 10, at age 83. He was a WWll navy man, had 4 ships shot out from under him and cmae home to make a wonderful life. He had one son, adopted 4 other children, then married my mother-in-law after both of their spouses died. My momma-in-law also has 4 adopted children. They were happy for 20 years together. About 1-1/2 years ago Weldon was helping a friend repair a roof on a shed (what 81 year old goes up on a shed?) and stepped through a bad spot in the plywood. It tore his knee up, so he decided to have it repaired. The anesthesia activated some lung thing from the war (crap he breathed in the ship) and he never recovered. He was working full time up until then, managing a federal building, active in his church youth group (yes, rd, as a leader!) and still working at a boy's home nearby. I feel so very blessed to have been a part of his clan, to have him as my domino-game partner and to have been his daughter. and I'm SO glad he's not having to lug that stupid oxygen tank around any more! I can just imagine him in Heaven, running around looking for something to fix, or someone to take care of. Can't be too sad, knowing that, yes, he is healed now. And I'm rambling ... :) Deb

you have some very colorful language in this well written piece of poetic vogue. I enjoyed the theme and the way you moved the imagery in a very richly woven poetic voice. This was just a delightful piece of poetic art to have read and written a review for... John

MamaDeb,
Your poem "Memories Long Ago" is an excellent poem. Great photo you've used. Your rhyme and descriptive scheme are well executed. I like your repeating lines. The last stanza I liked the best:
'I miss the sight of skies ablaze
when darkness comes and all reclaims.
I miss the sight of skies ablaze
in the coolness of the midnight.'
I could smell the hay as I read your excellent poem.

Hi, Melissa. It seems like so long since I've written here, and I miss your kindness. Been writing for hire, and doing other people's bidding. It was fun to write for ME again! Glad you enjoyed. H
How did that romance book contest end? Have they announced a winner, or do you know?

I don't recall who won. It was a risque one that won. Not my pick. The ones I liked didn't win.
    Melissa.

Although born and raised in Seattle, I grew up in the suburbs when everyone had chickens, small gardens and I remember waking every morning to the wonderful sound of all the roosters in the morning crowing. I hadn't thought about that in a long time. Your poem is marvelous and triggered a terrific and pleasant memory for me. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

Oh, now that is the perfect review! I'm glad not only that you enjoyed, but that it evoked memories of your own. I hadn't thought about those silly roosters in a while, either, but sure do miss them now that I'm remembering! Blessings (and congratz on all your recent winning work!), Deb
