Amen, sister. This is so cute and so true.
Love the Day but enjoy the peace and quiet
afterwards. I couldn't have stated it so
cleverly though. Loved your quatrain.

Embracing the peace ... what a fabulous way to end this poem, Brooke. I'm always sad when Christmas is over, but it feels so good to sit back with my feet up with a huge mug of hot chocolate and just listen to some music and remember. Wonderful.

Great description of the post-Christmas "un-cheer" (as opposed to Christmas cheer). Melted candles, muted bells, lack of presents, trees devoid of pine needles...it all adds up to a lack of noise/activity/etc., where peace fills the void.
It isn't until the final line that I realized that you are describing a sense of peace rather than a loss of joy. Unexpected (but greatly appreciated) twist!
but I instead embrace the peace. (Same here...but sometimes I wish that peace came BEFORE the actual holiday instead of afterward.)
As always, excellent work. I really enjoyed two of the phrases: "bells hang mute," and "no parents seek elusive toys." As a parent who was just last weekend frantically scouring the toy department aisle for a gift for my two year old, I can identify with the feeling that the perfect toy is eluding me. :)

ah, Laura, to find that peace beforehand is a little trick lots of people would like to accomplish! Thanks so much for your attentive, thoughtful review :-) Brooke

Yes, the last present has been
unwrapped, the smiles, the kisses,
the well wishes have all been said,
and now that time of rest for another
Christmas now past, and now a time
for rest.
Well done

Indeed, we all should embrace the
peace - in all its forms. I enjoy
Christmas so very much, Dec. 26 is usually
a real downer for me. But with visits to family
and plans for a trip in spring of 2010, I'm soon
carried away in plans and anticipation.
I love this poem - it's so full of the before
and after of Christmas day and settles the
reader into contentment by the end. Carolyn

Ah, that is very nice! Yes, the day after has a bit of a funny feel, not quite ready to head back into normal life, right? But this writing suggests that we should take the true meaning of Christmas and let it sink in, to last all the year! Great job.

Brooke, I am sure that you heard from many that could relate with you on this feeling. It is almost a relief to get to the finish line and then take a breath once you cross it. Loved it.
