Nice job Brooke. Dec 7th comes and goes with many not giving it a thought. This beautifully written piece nicely nudges the reader into reflecting upon that sad day. No corrections needed. k

I love this poem. It is incredibly poignant and I quite appreciate the note about what Advent means. The rhyming scheme is subtle but gives a nostalgic flow to the poem. What a sad time in history! I had never thought of this, but I suppose many of the soldiers were ready to go home for Christmastide when they were killed. Excellent work.

Oh, Brooke - This poem brought tears to my eyes. I always take a moment on December 7th to remember my father, who was just twenty years old on that fateful day. He was preparing to go overseas himself, for in Canada the war in Europe was already raging and the age for conscription into the war was 21. I remember him telling me how the fammily gathered round the radio and listened with shock and horror at the news of what the Japanese had done. Such a sad day. My father passed away in 1967 on December 11th. The two days are always linked in my mind as days of profound sadness.

Rose, I can only imagine the way families all over the globe reacted to the news of this day as they all realized not only the horror of the attack but the implications it would hold for the war and the world. Thank you for sharing your dad's experiences with me and thank you for your most generous response to this poem :-) Brooke

Brooke, this one really makes me reflect upon my three years stationed at Pearl Harbor. I've seen the wrecks that still remain in the harbor and have been to the Arizona Memorial (very humbling). Your words brought the ghosts of those ships to the surface in my mind. You did a wonderful job with this and for bringing in a perspective I haven't thought about. This one lingers for me. Nicely done :)

What strikes me are the "faces" that you give the men who died. You place them in families preparing for Christmas, with all too real activities pending. It makes us think about our soldiers today. how many are preparing to celebrate with family, or have hung decorations over their bunks? Will they live to see Christmas and to hear family?
I usre hope so.

This is an awesome poem that captures that horrible moment in history beautifully...I love how you were able to distill such huge ideas into few, very precise lines! Good job!

Amen and amen, what a fine poetic tribute to those who died and survived, both. Your hypothetical pondering really draws in the reader and humanizes the 'numbers', forcing all but the coldest of hearts to feel. Well done! :)
