Bhogg, this is such a touching true story of your love to Rachael. I'm sorry you lose so many episodes of your life with her and I'm glad you try to make it up by writing this story for her. The topic of senses, especially sound, becomes so beautiful in your hands. (Is that your picture?)

Thanks for reading Belinda and for the compliment of the 6. That is my picture, of Rachael, her husband, Lael and Luke. I see them as often as possible. With 8 grandchildren, all over the United States, I never see them as much as I would like. Bill

I know what an old porch swing hung on chain sounds like. I can hear it now, there's no sound more soothing on a lazy day. My two sons just married within a year of each other, there's nothing more beautiful that brings a bigger lump in your throat than to see your children start a life of their own. One can never hear enough "I love you's" in one's life.

Excellent! I found myself thinking of my husband who is the same kind of father and grandfather like the author. We are divorced but like the author he keeps his love and sense of commitment to his children and one granddaughter intact too. This story gave me a warm, fuzzy and nostalgic feeling all at once.

Hello bhogg.
I can relate to all you say about sights and sounds, but somehow many of them have always given me a melancholy feeling...sunset on water for example. It must be the melancholia of the Celtic Soul. :) This is a lovely presentation for your daughter and I hope she will be reading it. I enjoyed this excellent well written piece.
Fondly, Rebecca

Thank you Rebecca - you are very kind. I'm a U.S. southerner, so am cursed with a melancholy soul as well. Cheers..Bill

What a lovely story, bhogg, and of course, so right about sound
I especially love that last para:
In an open letter right now to Rachael, I apologize for the too frequent absence of a sound from me. A simple sound generated from saying three short words, "I Love You"
Thanks for sharing your story.

What a precious write for you and for Rachael. Our minds are wonderful- -how they take in those sights, sounds, smells and stores them so as we age we are brought back to some sweet memory of long ago- -love your tell about the hammock and your bringing that back with Lael in her little swing with that wonderful sound which I think so many are familiar with. A well-told story with precious memories. No errors that I spotted. Thank you for sharing.

Excellent story. I enjoyed reading about your associations with sounds. I did notice a couple of areas to edit:
I was still around for a lot of the high light (highlight)sounds,(replace , with :) graduations, birthday parties, etc.
Well(,) Lael did get fussy.
I espeecially like your description of your daughter in her dance recital.
Keep writing.

Absolutely charming. There were several places in this where I felt a little lump in the throat - the ending of course, the missing of certain significant sounds during your daughter's life, and the lovely image of her dancing on stage (I think my she and my daughter would have had much in common!)
Just the odd minor nit - I think it is just the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, just one?
After hearing the list of things I should do in her absence... Since you are talking about Rachael, should it not be something like "after recounting the list.... etc"?
A most enjoyable piece of writing - thanks for sharing. Sally

This was beautifully written on memories in your life that were happy. The hammock is obviously very important, with its own inimitable sound. Kept my interest from start to finish and was an absolute joy to read. Thank you for sharing it with me.
