Fantastic! I just loved this poem, even though the fay are not good creatures! So, are there any good fairies?

No matter how delectable to eat
no mushroom's worth the cost for one small treat.

I think there's a lesson in there which goes beyond fairies!

John

My daughter collects fairies - all the modern day ones are good and cute - it's in the old European folklore that they're a bit nasty. I usually write about the cute garden fairy variety :-) Thanks, John. Brooke :-)

Fairies can be nasty little creatures, and not all are like Tinkerbell, that's for sure. This cautionary poem is so well written, and the thought and mood fit this form very well. One of my favourite poems of all time is "The Changling," by Charlotte Mew. This reminds me a bit of the type of fay faries that she speaks about in her poem. Great poem, and especially so for the spooky month of October.

Thank you, Rose - many people today have totally lost the fairies of old with their mischief and think they are all cute like Tinkerbell - I wanted to have some fun with the more traditional fairies - I may have read that poem in the past but will have to reread :-) Brooke

It seems that many do want fairies to be sweet and sassy - but we know t'aint so, don't we? Do look up Charlotte's poem. It's on the web. Well worth the search and the read. Rose.

A very imaginary piece. The story was great and the imagery was amazing. A poem, an eerie warning and a consequence steeped in magic. A great autumn story.

Those stories of sweet babies snatched from sleep
and parents who find changelings in their place,
are not just fables of what humans reap
if they invade the fairies' sacred space.
("they" should be "you" because you've used "you" before. be consistent)

Should you uproot their home the price is steep,
so do not risk what cannot be replaced.
Tread lightly and be cautious when you hunt,
for fay are not good creatures to affront.

Thank you for your review and feedback. In that one place I use "they" it refers back to "humans" and makes more sense to me than "you." Yes, I know the listener is human, but humans/they just sounds far better to me and does not seem at all inconsistent with the other uses of "you." This will simply have to go down as a matter of personal taste and the poet's choice. :-) I appreciate your time and comments. Brooke

Hi Broke-
What a great poem! I love the rhyming and the form. It is a fun one to think on--bringing up the stuff of 'fairy tales'. Fine job!

Whew! I'm kinda scared! LOL
And I always thought of sweet little fairies - but I guess if you make them mad, they can lose their cool. haha

Those stories of sweet babies snatched from sleep
and parents who find changelings in their place, <--This gave me chills!

Fabulous writing, Brooke! I think you should collect all your fairy poems together. What a fabulous picture book!

The mischievous, even evil fairies are the original ones in European folklore - the cutesy ones came along way later. Thanks so much, Nic. Brooke :-)
