brooke,
i definitely love the lion pic. it is so fitting for this poem and person. yeah, can you imagine being willing to do whatever you could to win your freedom? i don't think people do. you don't think of maryland as being a slave state. great job.
love,
barbara

Barbara, thank you - Yes, I know, people think more about the deep South in terms of slavery, but it was alive and well in Maryland. Brooke

isn't maryland below the mason-dixon line?

He sounds like an admirable man. I have heard of him and I respect his determination and courage, along with his strong convictions towards human rights and freedom. I well chosen subject for your very good poem. Tony

That lion look to gentle for a mighty man like FD.
The day
he hopped aboard
that train on northbound track
he carried freedom's sword and ne'er
looked back
Inspired again. Well Done.

Good work. I have read a bout this guy I think. I am pretty sure that is the name of the slave i have read about. I read a lot of old south and civil war history (no mystery there, I am from Georgia).

Brooke,
This is an excellent poem in honor of a slave who escaped and then sought to help others. I enjoyed reading it, and I couldn't find anything to criticize.

Without your author notes, the poem is wonderful. The added information makes it outstanding.
Your use of imagery, with art and words, is terrific.
Very well done.

Oh yes, you did it again. A very wonderful poem to educate us on a very influencial person in history. Frederick Douglass was a wonderful man and had a great influence on American history. I know when we were stationed in MD, we went someplace and saw something on him, but I can't for the life of me remember. I am not driving my husband crazy trying to convince him to help me remember. He's positive I'm crazy, but what else is new.

Brooke, how much I enjoy these tributes to heroes of the past, particularly those involved in the struggle for freedom. I have never heard of this man who "carried freedom's sword", and thank you, once again, for this gem of history! :)
