It is amazing and terribly sad that so many problems can be solved with the cost of a few pennies, clean water, a little education. Yes the world is getting smaller and is a village. But so many of of fellow citizens are sadly ignorant of the basic lessons that would keep them alive and healthy.

You're right - many people are just totally unaware of conditions outside their own parochial world. Thanks, Deb. Brooke :-)

HI Brooke,
you are right about malaria. Sadly though $10 is a lot of money for amany Africans who need to buy food with that money.
Also $10 seems a hell of a lot. I can buy a decent mosquito net for that price in Blokker in Belgium!( Blokker a general store chain)
Also I know mosquito nets cost less than this in the Dominicam Republic. The locala even wanted to pay for one for me when I stayed in a house there - and these people have nothing.

Oh, I know the cost is astronomical to someone in this position, which is why they don't have them. Many people live on a dollar a day - they're never going to have 10 extra dollars, which is why donations are so important. I'm sure the nets can be bought for less than that, but an organization that collects them also has to ship them and operate their organization - I know when I worked for the American Friends Service Committee it often cost more to ship crates of items than the items themselves cost, and even do gooders have overhead and salary costs. I'm assuming the people in the Dominican Republic have more than those in Zambia then, for I truly doubt this is a scam and everyone could just be buying them for themselves. Thanks, Keith. Brooke

certainly they are a lot better off than their neighbours in Haiti they even try to help them. I don't know about Zambia, but I imagine they are in a similar situation.
The DR does get quite a bit of help from ythe US I believe especially with Lionel the current President who is trying to modernise the country despite earlier corruption charges against him.
Nevertheless they do live pretty poor. Some of them suspect the country may go the same way as Puerto Rico but not everybody there is keen on becoming a US state.

Another gem Brooke. Mozzies are a pet hate of mine having contracted Ross River Fever some 9 years ago. It takes 8 years to wear out of your blood stream and is pure hell for the first 6 months.
Your choice of photo certainly compliments the poem.

Mia, I have never even heard of Ross River Fever, but it sounds awful from what you say. I'm sorry you have such an awful reason for identifying with the message of this poem. Thank you. Brooke

I love the way you combine the writing of beautiful poetry with declaring your concern for unfortunate people, especially the children of Africa. Peter

Again, the quality of the poem is so good in rhythm, rhyme, and flow, but I'm not sure what to say about the concept. I hope you don't mind. Great job anyway.

brooke,
isn't it amazing how one so little can cause oh so much damage. sort of like fire ants. yuck. if the person lives through the first bout then they have to worry about further attacks later on. crazy, eh? so simple to buy. but $10 is a lot to some.
love,
barbara

Barbara, $10 is a fortune to some, which is why people continue to contract the disease and die - and why it is so important for people with more than enough money to donate the money for nets. Thanks so much. Brooke : -)

brooke,
i hope the people will accept them as well.

"Malaria" is a well crafted poem about one of our deadliest diseases of our time. Perfectly written Naani poem that reads and flows very smooth. Bravo!

Thank you for your thoughtful review - too bad we can't just end Stan to the affected areas and have him suck the infected blood right out of all the infected people and replace it with his healing venom! :-) Brooke

Hi Brooke,
Here in Brazil as well, it takes its toll. It's frightening how few people on a recent program I watched had access to netting. Sad to say, but many people in remote areas don't use currency, so $10 or the equivalent is impossible to pay.

Thanks, Shea. Yes, it is impossible for them to pay, which is why it is so important that people donate the nets. Brooke

A thoughtful piece, Brooke. I'm not sure how I FEEL about it, but it is clean, neat and well-written with an evocative premise that causes you to pause whie reading it.
