Your rules for writing good poetry are spot on, Skye. I try to use them myself, but you have written them down succinctly. (The only rule of yours which I don't follow is to use slant rhymes, which I absolutely hate. To me, they speak of laziness.) Anyway, it is obvious that you have given this subject a lot of thought. Good work.

Hi Skye,
This is a well thought out and presented description of how to write a poem. It gives the reader an idea of where to begin. I enjoyed the way you described the different devices and the guidelines in a way that is easy to understand. Great job!

I just started to write poetry when I joined Fanstory more than two months ago. I find your lesson here very valuable. The first seven points are important, and the next 9 are as important. I like number 9 most: "Does it satisfy you? ..." Thanks so much for sharing, I appreciate it very much.

Thank you for this great review. I have found it handy to have a check list... keeps me focused. Not a have-to, but a maybe....

I admire anyone who writes poetry. The detail and precision of your guide may inspire me to take the risk. I routinely castigate myself that I can't presume to be a "writer" unless I can master poetry. Capturing the universe in a mustard seed is what it's all about and no one does it better than an artful poet. Very well constructed, useful guide. Thank you.

I really appreciate your very thoughtful words and kind review. I am in awe of those who write pages that keep me glued to the end... that is far more difficult for me.

This is a clearly written and solid primer on writing poetry, skye. The only thing I might take issue with is when you say "the poet starts with thought"...some of us make a concentrated effort to rid our minds of thought when casting about for a poem and try to simply catch an image or a phrase to use as the starting point. Once this is done, the thinking begins.
Good job.

Wow. I did not know that. As a writer, I always have to start with thoughts.... what am I writing, why, what do I need to say, is it for a contest.. what is the purpose. Always a thought of some sort.
I really appreciate your kind words and review.

Your knowledge is quite apparent in your essay. You provide a wide span of information for the venturing poet to digest.
I simple dabble occasionally in the basic form of poetry, leaving the sculptured lines and deep thinking to those that know. My mind finds it next to impossible to filter description into a few well chiseled lines...I prefer to slowly sculpt my vision in pages of words.
Thanks for the lesson, hopefully my mind will absorb your wisdom.

I really appreciate your kind words. We all absorb what we need as writers... to write what we feel, for others to appreciate.

Great essay on writing poetry. I think your suggestions are helpful and informative. The only edit I saw was in your last line: There is nothing so satisfying as having one of your poems published or win(winning) a contest prize. Well said. Good luck.

I don't write poetry, but I'm amazed at how you poets do it. It takes me three hundred pages to make sense of everything and you write meaning in such a few short words. I'm amazed.
