Hello skye,

This is a very well thought out piece that all aspiring poets and writers should read. They should not only read it but ingrain this lesson in their hearts and minds. This lesson pretty much covers it all and the knowledge gained within this lesson is invaluable for anyone who is serious about writing poetry. There are many beginning and intermediate writers that only have an inkling about what it really takes to create something truly wonderful that will satisfy both them and others. They don't realize all the elements that go into creating an exceptional and satisfying poem, nor all the tools that are at their disposal. You've done a fabulous job of spelling it out in detail.

Bravo to you for writing this lesson which is a basic blueprint incorporating all the ideas and tools necessary to craft wonderful poetry.

Outstanding piece and deserves a 'sixer'.

minor suggestions..
There is nothing so satisying as seeing one of your poems published or win(ning) a prize

Skye, I think you have conveyed here a unique and
inspiring kind of "Declaration Of Poetics"; with as
much profoundness and portentous posterity as perhaps our
venerable "Declaration Of Independence".
You have so meticously, illustratively, compassionately
and engaglingly laid out not only the basics and ground
rules of writing good poetry; but moreover the intricate
and intrinsic creative aspects and essences that make it
memorable and rewarding. Every poet should make a copy
of it; and keep it near at hand as an invaluable reference.
You compliment the entire article with a wise teacher/
mentor's touch; guiding instead of espousing only the
technical rules and applications; and opening up windows
of clarity and understanding of the craft and creation
of poetry. We are so fortuned here for this insight
and contribution here for us poets on FS; and I thank
you for sharing this gem of knowledge and instruction.

This offers excellent advice with lucidity and well organized thought. I applaud your essay. YOU HAVE THE HEART OF A TEACHER.
Loved this-
"For your poem to live a life outside of your computer or dog-eared notebook, each must be shaped, gently sculpted into the form that will capture the editor's subjective notice."

Each point is well expressed and relevant to any writer.

Thanks for sharing!

One tiny nit-
Write daily. Every day.
I think 'daily' means 'every day', so 'every day' sounds redundant, but I suppose that was intentional?

I will book mark this - nice job!

Warmly, rd

I am so happy you liked this article about the elements of writing poetry. Yes, daily was written twice, for emphasis. We must practice our craft every single day.

I am going to copy and print this. You have excellent suggestions of which I will refer to in the future.

I really like this descriptive sentence:

For your poem to live a life outside of your computer or dog-eared notebook, each must be shaped, gently sculpted into the form that will capture the editor's subjective notice.

I also appreciate your list of poetic devices ... which I plan to refer to. Also, you ask some very important questions which would be very valuable to ask oneself when writing poetry. I especially like #9.

Some very important and helpful tips for writing poetry. Thank you for all the marvelous suggestions.

I am so happy you liked this article about the elements of writing poetry. When the prompt came up, I thought about it, and decided I do know a little, and often had wished I had a list of ideas, suggestions, etc. to focus on... who knew you could find such a thing way back when... before we were lucky enough to have internet access. LOL

skye - I know very little about writing poems, but your article has increased my knowledge ten fold. I think, though, I will leave the craft to those more capable than me. Enjoyed it. Charlie

Skye, I like your advice because it provides lots of clear suggestions that are explained well, but it does not dictate - you give people all sorts of devices to choose from. I read an essay on this site recently that sounded far too dictatorial to me - DO THIS or it is NOT poetry. That turned me off. Brooke

This is wonderful. Wondeful because it tells the reader specifically what needs to be done to write a good poem. It is a great guideline to use and check one's work. Better than philosophy, it has a pragmatic quality.
