You captured the spirit of Janis Joplin !
I loved it.
I especially liked:
With raw emotion as her guide
she'd grab the galling ache inside
and dare those demons to prevail
as she let out that anguished wail
I remember the sound of her "anguished wail"...it reverberated through my bones.

I'm so glad you think I've captured her spirit - thanks ever so much! Brooke :-)

Hi Brooke I'm a bit behind with my reviews, just thought I'd check in. Ialso enjoyed Janis Joplin's music, she told such raw stories. I do like songs with a story, after all they are poems. By the way great poem from you and memories. Cheers Gaye

I knew she died young, but I didn't think it was at age 27 (that's a little scary-I'm 27!! *LOL*). As far as female vocal artists are concerned yes, she is one of the best, if not the best, one. But regardless, she is the best one from that generation. Her music is known to practically everybody (well at least those with some semblance of taste *LOL*). Her hoarse and raw voice is what made her stand out the from the rest. It was as if she were the music, not just a performer of it. DA** YOU, for being able to see her too!! *LMAO*
I think you nailed her to a T in this one. Everything we feel and have seen is all right there within just those few words (comparatively).
GREAT JOB!!!
Jaded:)
Boy, I hope that is all of them, I don't think I can deal with any more heartache right now...*LOL*;)

Jaded, I may do more, but I'm not going to do a bunch in a row. I saw lots and lots and lots of people in the late 60's and early 70's - my boyfriend/husband and I were just avid concert goers in a day when people, even teens, could afford to be. Nowadays, between the tickets and parking, two people can't get into many concerts for under $200, and that is hardly the highest rate going. Thanks, Brooke

Oh, I would LOVE to read more! That era fascinates me to no end. I can not get enough:) It was just that day I was getting a bit to disappointed that I wasn't there........that's all:)
Have you ever seen 'Across the Universe'? It is a terrific movie that takes place and showcases the turmoil of the 60's and it is all set to Beatles music (granted they aren't the singers-and I hate that kind of stuff-but the movie wouldn't make sense it the Beatles sang them). It has become one of my favorite movies. If you haven't watched it, may I suggest you do. I think you would like it. It makes a lot more sense if you know the songs (titles and some lyrics) though, but even if you aren't an expert it is still a great movie!!!

My wife exposed me to Janis Joplin for what would be the reality of my first time.
I think you nailed her, Brooke. Good piece here and perfectly clear.

Hi Brooke,
You captured her in your poem. You managed to bring in your love for the singer and person and mixed it with the essence of who she was. :) NIce job.

Yes she could certainly wail! I didn't know much about her, but I have seen videos of her performances. And like so many performers, her life was cut short.
Another nice read, my friend. I can't wait to see who you will be writing about next!
Best wishes,
Malcolm

brooke, you and my wife share a lifelong passion for Janis. my wife has made me appreciate the singer's incredible talent, her awesome voice, and as you say, the music coursing through her veins. you have penned a very good tribute to, what Sirius XM radio calls, the best voice of the rock era. well done.

This is a wonderful tribute to Janis Joplin. She was so young and her life was still ahead of her and her music was a great influence of the culture of the time. You have a very good and moving tribute to her.

You'll think me musically gauche if I admit that I've not heard of Janis, but I do feel the vibes that she induced in you, vibrations that now agitate this poem, so many years after you were sweet eighteen. Of course, you also fight back, and you are winning too. Thank you, Brooke, for sharing. Peter

Peter, that is OK - you're a tad older than I am and from across the sea - I will forgive you :-) Thanks so much, dear friend :-) Brooke

There's some wonderfully visceral language in this poem; coursing, pulsing, stomping, galling, anguished wail...
What often amazes me about live performances is how the songs can suddenly make so much more sense; I guess that's the mark of a proper performer, singing their own words the way they feel to them. I've also been surprised by a few pop acts, who turn out to be genuinely intriguing performers (as well as all the ones that are lost without their amps and trickery :-)).

Mike, don't get me started with the ones who lip sync and get lost among the back up dancers and costumes and sets and props - the very words Lady Ga Ga make me want to puke!!! LOL
Thanks, Brooke :-)
